Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Therapists in Durham, NC
We work with people who are living with stroke, traumatic brain injury, dementia, and related diseases/disorders as well as their families and caregivers.
In 2013, I sustained a traumatic brain injury. After a year of intensive speech therapy, I learned strategies to manage my communication impairment. Through my personal and professional experience, the need for providers well-versed in how to counsel people who have acquired communication disorders became clear.

To me, therapy isn’t a workbook or a road map that’s the same for everyone. Therapy is about meeting you where you are. I want to learn about your unique strengths, values, goals, and struggles. I strive to support you in navigating your struggles, and in making choices in alignment with your values as you work toward your goals. I am curious about what brings you fulfillment and exploring avenues to infuse joy into your days, with a strength-based, benefit-enhancement approach. I view therapy as a collaborative process, know that you are the expert on your own experience, and meet each client as the individual you are.

My ideal client is someone who feels anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected—especially after a major loss, trauma, or big life transition. They may be navigating relationship struggles, parenting stress, identity exploration, body image concerns, neurodivergence, or the challenges of disability or chronic illness. At their core, they want to feel grounded again, to reconnect with themselves, and to move through life with more clarity, ease, and confidence.

Heyo! I’m Ally (they/them) You're in the right place if your brain feels like it's running 87 tabs at once. One is screaming anxiety, another is replaying a conversation from three years ago, and a few are busy worrying about everyone else. You've spent so long in survival mode that being present in your own body feels foreign. Maybe you're LGBTQIA+ and tired of explaining or defending who you are, even in spaces that are supposed to be safe. Maybe you're navigating trauma, dissociation, people-pleasing, or a gender journey, and talking about it hasn't been enough. You just want to feel like yourself and reconnect with who you are.

When should someone seek treatment for a traumatic brain injury?
People should seek a diagnosis and treatment after a head injury, especially if they were unconscious, and an early diagnosis can lead to a better recovery. Signs of a concussion include headaches, nausea or vomiting, exhaustion, dizziness, vision problems, sensitivity to light and sound, problems with attention and memory, brain fog, unusual irritability or sadness, and unusual sleep patterns.
What’s the most common treatment for a traumatic brain injury?
Treatment for a traumatic brain injury will be different depending on the severity of the problem. For mild injuries, treatment may involve rest and over-the-counter pain or headache medication. For moderate or severe injuries, treatment may involve stabilization, medication, and rehabilitative therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, cognitive therapy, and counseling.
How long does it take to recover from traumatic brain injury?
The recovery time for a traumatic brain injury depends on the individual and the severity and nature of the injury; the length of time spent unconscious is often an indicator of severity. Recovery time for mild injuries may be a week or two while recovery time for more severe injuries may be six months to two years. Research suggests that the vast majority of recovery occurs in the first two years after an injury; recovery after that time frame is less certain.
What if a traumatic brain injury is left untreated?
If a traumatic brain injury is left untreated, it can lead to long-term physical and mental health problems. Physical problems may include dizziness, headaches, vision, healing, or speech loss, and an elevated risk of dementia. Psychological problems may include impairments of memory, judgment, and decision-making, depression, aggression, poor impulse control, and personality changes.
