While I have worked with a large variety of patients and presenting problems, I specialize in working with trauma, depression, anxiety, sexuality,
spirituality
, creativity, and relationships.
What do I do for a living? I meet with people and talk about the most intimate aspect of their lives. It's not a bad job and I love the work I get to do. While I often draw from a variety of psychological techniques, I am firmly rooted in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic theory which is a really fancy way of saying I believe authentic relationships bring about sincere change in people. As such, I work hard to create a trusting, comfortable space to help clients explore their goals and experience sincere growth.

*My Practice is currently full.* I began a search over 20 years ago that allowed me to experience healing in ways that honor the entire human being -not just the mind. My approach is one that honors each client's strengths and path towards wholeness. I empower clients towards their own self-healing. My work is integrative - utilizing mindfulness and inviting the soul/spirit, mind & body to drive the process of therapy. I specialize in non-pathologizing therapies. I strive to create an atmosphere of safety first and foremost. I feel that
spirituality
is an integral part of the healing process.

When life becomes overwhelming, whether from a specific event or exhaustion over time, we can begin our healing journey right where the difficulty began, in relationship. The client-counselor relationship is the foundation of our work together. In addition, therapy is an opportunity to give focused attention to the various parts and pieces of ourselves that have been hurting, and offer them truth and care, so we can step further toward our truest selves. If we engage our story, lifestyle, and bodily sensations with curiosity, and a desire to heal, then we can open up to breathtaking transformation.

I have been a therapist many years, working with depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, relationship and family issues, self-esteem, masculinity, gender and sexuality, identity, religion and
spirituality
, career issues, and much more.
First, I want to say hello and acknowledge the strength, courage and determination it takes to seek help. Therapy can be an enriching, powerful journey. People come to therapy because they want something to change and want to better understand themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. Therapy can also be uncomfortable and hard work. Experience has taught me that human beings possess the most amazing resilience, strength, and capacity to heal, whatever challenges they have faced in life. I work to build on these strengths to help people achieve the changes that they want in life, and challenge what doesn't work.

Therapy will help you to connect more deeply and honestly with yourself, so that you can answer these questions sincerely, and become more free to engage in authentic living. Give me a call or an email so we can schedule an introductory session and discuss what it is that you are pursuing.

I believe that good counseling, beginning with a natural fit between client and therapist, can be one of the most important and beneficial experiences of our lives. I am passionate about working with my clients and strive always to bring my natural compassion and creativity to each session. I find I am most helpful to clients struggling with loss, grief, depression, anxiety, and relationship issues, though I help clients work through other issues as well. Because I am trained in theology as well as psychotherapy, I bring a unique understanding of faith and
spirituality
to my practice, welcoming clients from any (or no) faith tradition.

Also, as a non-binary, queer person, I have particular interest in working with clients around the various intersections of LGBTQIA+ identity,
spirituality
, and religious trauma.
For so many of us, the past several years of pandemic and political unrest have taken a serious toll on our well-being, our mental health, our sense of belonging, and even our faith in humanity itself. In order for us to figure out how to navigate the tension between the world’s brokenness and its wholeness, I believe we first have to learn to navigate that tension within ourselves. As a therapist, I’m privileged to get to journey alongside people who are engaging in that work and to help my clients develop and access whatever tools and strategies will be most effective for them in their unique circumstances.

I enjoy fostering healthy exploration for adults, adolescents, and couples processing issues of differentiation, self-esteem, anxiety, family of origin, relational health,
spirituality
, and more.
I approach counseling with the belief that I encounter every client in the middle of a story. Within these stories, individuals are influenced by their relational contexts and histories––therefore, what they have been through is worth exploring. At the same time, I believe all are active agents in their present and future––I seek to empower clients toward change while fostering awareness of what has shaped them. In the context of safety, individuals are able to begin embracing agency and taking new risks which might otherwise feel inaccessible or overwhelming. Through these new risks, freedom and growth is possible.

Whether you are looking to build self confidence, start your spiritual journey, or just need to maintain your mental health I want to be a part of that journey.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
