Parenting through your child’s developmental needs and season of life may also trigger past trauma, identity/role questions, exploration of your own family of origin, or may simply warrant additional supports for you.
I am passionate about walking alongside and empowering children, adolescents, and caregivers through therapy and assessment services. Life with children is full of new, constantly changing chapters. Challenging chapters may include learning your child has specific learning or behavioral needs, feeling concerned for a child or teen that is withdrawn, navigating your child’s adoption narrative with them, or providing a safe space for your child to process trauma, to name a few. Treatment specialties include parent -child relationships, identity development, trauma work, adoption, school and behavior problems, mood disorders and ADHD.

Are you an individual who has overcome a lot to find success in life and you find that you "should be" happy, but you can't figure out how to get there? Are you searching for parenting support (post-partum to adult) or are you a person of color who wants to explore and process childhood trauma or current struggles at work or home? Are you a black woman who is seeking "the soft life" because it has been hard to ask for help or express feelings because you are afraid to be labeled an "angry black woman"? If any of this applies to you, I am the therapist for you.

I am here to help your child, and you! Parenting in of itself has challenges, but when your child is struggling or exhibiting troubling behaviors, there is additional stress and worries that can be confusing and overwhelming. When a child exhibits problematic behaviors, they are signs that the child needs help. We will work together to minimize and diminish those behaviors, while also understanding what underlies those behaviors, and is creating inner conflict for your child. By gaining insight into your child’s perspective and their feelings, you will be able to relate to them in a way that will bring you closer together.

I provide parenting sessions to ensure caregivers have the tools they need to support skill building in communication, emotion identification and regulation, and peer relationships.
Children, adolescents, and parents experience unique joys and challenges. When children are feeling big emotions, it can sometimes look like anxiety, depression, physical aggression, and defiance. Adolescents are navigating their identities and social relationships. Parents are trying to balance their own needs with those of their families. Therapy is a place to access emotional support and skill building. I provide play therapy to support children, and utilize a more directive style to support adolescents and parents. I provide a safe space that empowers clients to utilize their unique strengths, and I am LBGTQ+ affirming.

Telehealth and in-person. Being a parent is TOUGH. I will listen to your concerns/hopes while providing a nonjudgmental environment to explore the issues your child and family may be facing. I am passionate about childhood mental health, and only work with children and teens (ages 2-16). Some children I see experience issues with adjustment, anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues, self-esteem, trauma, and interpersonal conflict. Some children ask to come to therapy; some don't. I focus on building trust and rapport with every client I work with.

I've learned volumes about parenting from my own children, though no lesson is learned soon enough.
I work with individuals and couples, as well as children, in both DC and Chapel Hill. I do best with adults who are educated or reflective: many are scientists, artists, health and business professionals, or psychotherapists, and some are not pursuing conventional achievement. Some see me for family or work problems, some for help dealing with a chronic health issue or a loss, some to change longstanding emotional and interpersonal patterns involving anxiety, anger, or intimacy. We may try quick and simple approaches first, because sometimes they work, but if not we can go more deeply into the individual's unique personal narrative.

In addition to individual and family therapy, I provide parenting education for those seeking to manage both routine and difficult emotional and/or behavioral challenges with their children.
My approach to therapy is to build a safe environment for clients where we work to develop coping strategies, interpersonal skills, and insight to move toward emotional and behavioral health. I treat a variety of common issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, school problems, ADHD, and adjustment difficulties) as well as more complex ones, such as those resulting from trauma. I find that therapy is most effective when clients have the support of significant individuals (e.g., parents) and I welcome their inclusion in the treatment process.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
