With over 25 years of experience, I subscribe to a solution-focus philosophy, in which I strive to address the problem with you as quickly as possible, but with enough depth to avoid relapse. I set goals early in treatment with adults and couples, or with children/teenagers and their families, so we can find successful solutions and change behavior problems, emotional difficulties, academic difficulties, or family problems as soon as possible. I love people and people's stories, and am always truly and deeply interested in the story of every child, teen, and adult I meet! I also think laughter is therapeutic and therapy can be fun.

Are you stuck and needing to process childhood trauma? Is your adolescent/teen sad, anxious or angry, and you know they need help? Do you feel like no one understands the challenges of creating a family (infertility, perinatal loss, miscarriage, IVF, adoption) or navigating (peri)menopause? I shifted careers into mental health counseling in 2016 after 20 years of community advocacy to address injustice and empower women, children, and communities. I am a healing-centered, trauma-focused therapist now because I believe you - and your family - deserve guidance and support to reimagine and re-author your life narrative.

I specialize in adult psychosis and childhood issues, ranging from ADHD, trauma, anxiety, depressions, and ODD.
Accepting New Clients. When "Life" happens, it happens fast and sometimes in a way that throws what we had planned for ourselves off course. But, just because we get off track, that does not mean we are lost forever. Life was made to have highs and lows, but successfully navigating through those highs and lows will be our greatest accomplishment. My greatest passion is working with those that are having difficulty navigating these very highs and lows of life. We are not always able to change our physical environment or the "Life" things that happen, BUT we can change the way we look at these events. And THAT is why I am here.

Inevitably, we all face challenges in our lives. They come in many forms, ranging from an unexpected diagnosis, to a spirited child, to a significant loss. I believe that we are all stronger than we realize when faced with these situations. Sometimes we just need help seeing the strength in ourselves. I feel honored to help my clients walk through difficult periods in their lives and respect their unique journeys.

Mick Jagger’s well known refrain tells a story, "I can’t get no satisfaction.” When this refrain becomes a personal credo, our patterned responses to life’s disappointments may provide clues for a way forward.  For all of us, the world can disappoint. Everyone has a calling. I believe mine is supporting children, young adults and families. For younger children, I work collaboratively with parents to understand the sources contributing to the child’s difficulties, to help rebuild a feeling of closeness, warmth and effective parenting. For older adolescents and young adults, our work is often centered on preparing to launch as an independent adult. That means strengthening relationships with family and friends, sorting out the balance of work and life choices, making values-based career decisions, and figuring out how to live in a way that really aligns with personal values.

Everyone thinks you have it all together but in reality, you’re exhausted. Life is weighing you down and you desire peace & balance within but it seems unobtainable. The fear of judgment forces you to suppress your feelings. It seems like there's no one you can trust and feel vulnerable with and share your deepest thoughts and fears out loud. You manage to push through every day and find yourself feeling tired, alone, and frustrated because no one understands and shows up for you when you need it the most. It's time for a change, but figuring out where to start is a challenge for you.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?

The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?

Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?

Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?

ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
