I believe I am especially good at helping men who might find therapy intimidating.
I enjoy working with clients who seek to grow emotionally, relationally and spiritually. I believe therapy is an opportunity to come alongside others to help them heal and grow. I am relational in my approach. I believe that people have been broken in relationships and that we are healed in the context of relationships. Over the past 19 years I have had many clients reach their goals and experienced transformation through the counseling process. There is no greater privilege than being able to walk beside people in their healing journey. Evening and weekday appointments available. Contact me via phone, text or email.

A foundational quote for my work as well as my life has been “Be kind for everyone is facing a hard battle.” One’s battle could be feeling alone even when surrounded by people, trying to manage countless life stressors, or struggling to overcome addiction amongst others. Meeting you where you are at and seeing past your symptoms to who you are as a person is central to who I am as a counselor. Within your battle, I strive to compassionately assist you in recognizing the strengths that you have within yourself to cope.

Everyone could benefit from talking with a counselor to help cope with life's stressors. You may prefer to meet with a counselor one-on-one to help improve your quality of life. If your intimate relationship is a concern, you and your partner(s) could utilize relationship counseling to communicate more effectively and regain the passion that drew you together. Building a support network and feeling as if you belong are also valuable resources that group counseling can provide. Regardless of your concern, there are multiple counseling options to help meet your needs. Initiating counseling services is the first step to feeling better.

My goal is to help people create effective, satisfying transitions in their lives. I believe we all have inherent strengths that we can tap into to meet our goals and get through the difficult times in our lives. It can be incredibly helpful to work with someone to identify and work through the barriers that exist between our current situation and where we would like to end up in life.

You were at work, feeling okay, when a colleague made a small joke at your expense. Some laughed, and you even forced a chuckle yourself. But inside, you crumbled. Your heart pounded, a wave of heat swept over you as your cheeks flushed and sweat poured down your brow. Your confidence, which only ever seems to hang on by the thinnest thread, was shattered again. Any slight criticism only confirms what your inner voice has been relentlessly insisting; “You’re not good enough.” You thought given your success in life, you’d be over this by now. Something needs to change, but how?

Suffering is inevitable, and that really sucks. Sometimes you feel like nothing will ever get better, everything is your fault, and if you ever show your true self to the world, everyone will reject you. We wake up feeling like we can’t do this again, we’re completely unlovable, and everyone is always judging us. Deep down, you just want to be accepted for who you are. You are worthy of being seen and heard! Through therapy, you can stop numbing yourself and accept your true self.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
