I have 25 years of experience working with individuals, families and children. We all have struggles in life. I personally believe that everyone can benefit from therapy. Every person's struggle presents an opportunity to make life changes. Sometimes it's hard to determine which road to take or even how to carry on in life. Good support and a therapist who accepts you with respect and dignity, presents as non-judgmental and objective, can help you clarify your needs, goals, and wants. You will move forward and figure out how to become your best self. Then, you can learn to use some of these techniques yourself!

I am a native of Western North Carolina who has been delivering counseling services in the area for over 16 years. My desire is to offer quality mental health treatment to the people in our community. I provide services to children, adults, and families. I believe in starting where you’re at and providing support and clinical tools to help promote hope, healing, and wholeness. I recognize that the heaviness of mental illness, pain, and suffering can oftentimes act as a weight that keeps an individual bound and my goal is to help loosen bonds and promote liberty.

I am not able to accept new patients at this time. Please contact my associate, Kayla Coker, LCMHC. I have worked in this community since 1974. I believe everyone has the capacity to live a happy and fulfilling life. Professional counselors can help find a path through serious emotional disturbances, or a hard time in life, or heal wounds from abuse or other problems. People may seek counseling to embrace their growth and make life better. I work on the principle of a balanced life, taking responsibility for one's self, engaging support, and trusting one's self.

I have a private counseling practice in western rural North Carolina. Life can be so difficult sometimes, and often it helps to talk to someone other than a friend or family member to sort through problems. starting with right where you are and/or explore issues from the past that continue to bother you.

I am not afraid of hearing the hard truths that you don't share with others. I find it an honor and a privilege to come along side someone who trusts me enough to share their life, the good and the bad. I have supported people who have experienced things that they believe others think to be unreal, people who believe there is no reason to keep living, people who partake in activities they know are not good for them, people who struggle to have healthy relationships, and people that have been living in darkness. I want to help you break away from that darkness. I want to provide a space that fosters security, hope, and healing.

I work with people who feel overwhelmed--by work, big transitions, relationships, family, life. My approach is gentle, non-judgmental, and deep. I enjoy helping clients become more fully aware of themselves and of the patterns that hold them back in life, and working with them to feel more grounded and connected with themselves and with others. Many of my clients are people who are in helping professions or caretaking roles. Many are women or non-binary individuals, and are longing to feel more at home in their own skin and more confident in their own strength, beauty, and wisdom.

I have experience working with almost all experiences and diagnosed disorders. I enjoy working with people over the age of twelve who are exploring their gender identity, their sexuality, their familial and social relationships, and day-to-day stressors. I like working with families and, in addition to individual sessions, provide family and sibling therapy. I work from an anti-racist, LGBTQ+ affirming, social justice-oriented lens and celebrate all identities, abilities, and intersectionalities.

Are you ambitious but fear you won’t have the energy levels or emotional stability to maintain your goals? Do you struggle with needing things to be perfect, doubt your abilities, stress, struggle to focus, or feel down on yourself? Feeling like a burden all the time and hiding parts of yourself makes you feel stuck. Time management is off and your once helpful routines are a distant memory. And still, you're doing the things you need to, but feeling exhausted, alone, and overworked is not sustainable. You know there's a better way to move through the world and you're ready to feel lighter, organized, supported, and sustainable.

As we increase our ability to meet life from a state of relaxed, focused awareness, our answers emerge naturally. The brain/mind/body is always working towards health and well-being. Sometimes there are blocks in the way. These blocks create anxiety and depression in various forms. I believe the purpose of therapy is to help remove barriers to allow your own natural healing to proceed. A safe, accepting, and collaborative therapeutic relationship fosters increased emotional balance and well-being, including at the level of your neurochemistry. I use various approaches and work with clients as co-detectives to explore your answers.

How can I find a therapist in Cherokee County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
