I specialize in trauma, substance use /addiction, anxiety, and depression.
There are times for all of us when we feel helpless or powerless over our situation. I'm here for those moments to walk alongside you - not in front, behind, or to the side. True empathy is when someone seeks to understand you and meet you where you are. My goal is to help people figure out how to use their strengths to thrive in their existing environment. Our thoughts, feelings, and actions all affect each other. If we can find the strengths in our narratives, we can redefine the way we tell our stories.

For 16+ years, I have practiced in various clinical settings working with children, adolescents, and adults enduring a wide range of mental health, substance use , and traumatic challenges.
I believe we are all recovering from something. As a clinician, I believe that a healthy nonjudgmental relationship is foundational to each of our healing journeys. Having someone who we can be honest with, who is honest with us, allows us to be honest with ourselves and reach our ultimate potential. While the therapeutic relationship is our foundation, I incorporate elements of motivational interviewing, solution focused, cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies in order to meet you where you are and help you get to where you want to be.

I have over 20+ years in treating mental health and substance use disorders along with personal experiences of recovery in both utilizing a mind-body approach, cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness.
How discouraging it is to realize where you are, not understand how you got here and even worry it could get worse. What would life feel like with less worry, second guessing, comparison and overwhelm? Is anxiety, depression, fear of failure, perfectionism , regret about substance use and inability to forgive yourself chronic? Could healthier boundaries and less people pleasing improve relationship satisfaction? Do you yearn to deepen your connection to others in a more authentic way to reduce isolation and loneliness?

Life can be tough, and leave us feeling helpless and tired. When the harshness of life, either grief, pain, anxiety, depression, substance use (yours or another's), trauma, discrimination, or transition, is heavy it often feels like anyone we talk with is another person we have to take care of. When our bucket is full and our strength is running out, it seems that there is no other way to live. In the darkest of times, we all want a place to rest our burden where we can be seen and heard.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
