My top priority is to provide a safe, supportive environment for anyone struggling with their identity, experiences, or beliefs in addition to other mental health concerns. I work with a variety of issues with a focus on PTSD, depression, anxiety, dissociation, trauma, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, relationship difficulties,
spirituality
and/or religious trauma in addition to other concerns. I am especially passionate about work with anyone seeking a supportive space to heal, discover who they are, or navigate existential concerns, welcoming those of all beliefs in finding connection, hope, and peace.

I believe while therapists may be the experts of therapy, clients are the experts of themselves. Part of what this means is that you are responsible for your energy and direction of the treatment process. I will help you develop and facilitate your goals, and then you will be the one responsible for doing the work. This could mean there is work to be done between sessions, collaboration with other outside people, or opportunities to embrace difficult moments. Therapy is not about a “fix.” It is about healing and growth, both of which take time and effort. I believe most of you are hurting now. I honor and revere that.

I enjoy working with adolescents and adults who wish to process past trauma utilizing EMDR, those experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship troubles, and those who are struggling with
spirituality
/faith concerns.
Our life experiences inevitably shape us as individuals. They impact the way we interact with ourselves, others, and the world around us. They even influence our careers, attitudes, and perspectives. In the case of experiencing trauma, this can lead us to live lives characterized by avoiding triggers, feeling isolated, and doing whatever it takes to find spaces that feel safe in a world that, otherwise, feels unsafe. I know the devastation of feeling like you have lost yourself as a result of experiencing trauma, and I know the resiliency it requires to begin to pick up the pieces of what feels like a shattered life and try again.

I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in North Carolina for over 25 years. I take seriously the trust that clients place in me when choosing to work with me in psychotherapy and as a result I create a safe, non-judgmental space where life's challenges can be examined and explored and where a sense of health and well being can be found or reestablished. My specialties include relationship/couples counseling, trauma resolution, and the integration of
spirituality
and psychotherapy using the spiritual framework of my clients.

Boyce is uniquely trained to address issues related to faith and
spirituality
, including questions and doubt.
A candidate at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas in Chapel Hill, Dr. Boyce has a deep appreciation of the complexities of the mind as well as the impact of early experiences and relationships. Psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theories offer a comprehensive understanding of human nature. As opposed to other models that aim to solve a particular problem or target symptoms, psychoanalysis gets to the heart of the matter. Dr. Boyce provides therapy that addresses the whole person, helping the individual to develop inner capacities that can improve relationships as well as foster a richer, more meaningful life.

For 20 years, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families by combining the behavioral sciences with
spirituality
to work towards a better sense of well-being for people.
Life can be challenging. And right now, in some ways, it seems even harder. Having trouble figuring out where to go next? Start here. Many people hesitate to get started with counseling because taking that first step can be hard. Yet, being stuck in life or continuing in a dysfunctional situation is much harder. Today is a good day to start in a different direction with a more hopeful future.

Believing that
spirituality
is an important component of a balanced life, I take a non-denominational perspective, honoring the particular spiritual orientation of those who come to see me.
I can help with relationships issues, depression, anxiety, and life/work balance. I have been helping people recover from substance abuse problems and addictions for many years, finding this work very rewarding. I am a firm believer in the Twelve Step model of recovery.
I prefer taking an active approach in helping people resolve the issues for which they come to me. This will include specific steps to take between sessions.
In believing that each person's story and situation is unique, I tailor my approach to the individual or couple.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
