I have extensive experience with complex trauma, depression, suicidal and self-harming clients, and more.
Psychologist Robert Johnson's words capture my philosophy: "It's not too difficult to get the skeletons out of the closet with people, but to get the gold out is a different matter. That is therapy. Psychology is the Art of finding the gold of the spirit." My approach, rooted in collaboration, respect, and validation, remains consistent across various therapeutic models. If you're seeking a companion on your journey to uncover the "gold of the spirit," I would be honored to walk that path with you.

Adolescence can be a rocky time for many people, but I believe therapy can be of great help. I work with teenagers and young adults, struggling primarily with mood, identity, and impulse control difficulties. My goals are to help young people build their strengths and relationships in order to find happiness and success as emerging adults. Some of the things I treat are: depression, self-harm, anxiety, family conflict, gender dysphoria, transition to young adulthood stress, and disordered eating habits. Generally I practice cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectal-behavior therapy (DBT) within a caring, humanistic approach.

I am a psychologist with many years of experience working with teens and adults with emotional difficulties. I believe the key to successful treatment is a good client-therapist match and your motivation to getting help. In terms of therapy style, I use an interactive, collaborative approach - a genuine and warm dialogue between two persons who work together to understand/resolve issues. Also, I view myself as someone who asks questions that motivate you to gain further insight about issues of concern and, when you are ready to make changes, I will give you tools and skills to implement them.

Every day, I interact with people who are brokenhearted, grieving, and/or anxiously waiting to be seen for who they are. Suppose you are looking for an environment to work through these or similarly complex spaces and would like to improve the quality of life for yourself or those you love. As a counselor, I know vulnerability can be scary because of the possibility of being hurt while hoping for better. As a human, I am passionate about providing safe spaces filled with care, compassion, and collaboration.

You might be going through some dynamic struggles in your family right now. Wanting there to be a stronger connection between you and your partner, or even children, and nothing seems to be working. Communication might not be your strong suit and you want to convey everything that's jumbled in your mind the best way possible. It might be hard for you to find friends right now and you can't figure out why. Depression might be taking a toll on you, and you feel like you're in a pit with no way out. There's nothing wrong with these feelings. It's normal. Together, we can talk, and work through it!

I’m passionate about therapy as a tool for helping young people develop and grow. Adolescence through young adulthood can be a challenging period of time for people, especially in a post-pandemic world. I believe therapy can be a positive tool for teenagers and young adults when they are met where they are, and are given a space to be authentic, vulnerable, and genuine.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
