Psychodynamic Therapists in Charlotte, NC
What I hear most frequently is that people are seeking an understanding of their motivations - why do I do things I do? In asking this question, they're often looking for deeper satisfaction both at work, or school, and in relationships with friends and family. And through our conversations, they often find their pathway in their career, speak up more effectively, and connect more deeply with those they love. Men's topics are a focus of my work, as well as important work with women and older adolescents.

Most challenges we face as humans are "normal" as opposed to there being something "wrong" with us. However, we can often feel alone and overwhelmed when facing problems. Talking to a caring person can make a difference. I believe it helps to have an objective, knowledgeable and wise coach to help you find your way. I like to use analogies and work as a team with a client.

Real change is hard, long-term work not meant to be done alone. Dysfunctions around sexuality, food, money and work (the so-called "process" addictions) are primarily a struggle with intimacy. One needs to understand THE FUNCTION OF one's own self - destructive behaviors: that self hatred is not low self esteem; that contempt for others is not good self concept; that my wife is not the problem; and that sex is not my greatest need. I am several steps ahead of you on a journey I encourage you to take. Real change is hard, don't do it alone. :)

Places you come to, places you leave behind, and places you still hope to reach. You have come to one of life’s tough places, finding confusion and conflict. Instead of fully enjoying life, you are spending much of it on anxiety, stress, disappointment, shame, loneliness, and sadness. There are places of greater calm, simplicity, and well-being, where relationships are caring, connections are deep, and ease is daily. You have strength to make inroads towards new places and the wisdom to find greater acceptance and enjoyment of your life journey. "On the long, rough road, the sun and moon will continue to shine" -Thich Nhat Hanh

Life feels confusing and often times overwhelming. You're not sure what is 'normal' and you're exhausted by the intensity of your emotions. You feel like you've exhausted all other options. You’re hoping to find someone who can listen without the fear of judgement. Who can offer support and help you get answers. You’re wanting the thoughts that tell you “you’re not good enough” to stop. Whether this is a new pain or a chronic one, by looking for help you are taking a courageous step. I understand how scary it can be to ask for help.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
