With the many challenges in life today, we often find ourselves looking for a guide in finding our unique strength and resilience to persevere. Whether it be our relationships with others or ourselves, sometimes we need another person to help us look, objectively, at the obstacles in order to create the life we want to live. I have a passion for helping clients discover their authentic selves in both mind and body. My experience is with individuals experiencing difficulty with life transitions, anxiety, issues of self worth, co-dependency and relationships. A specific focus for me is on pregnancy and postpartum issues for women.

Motherhood (and fatherhood!) looks different on everyone. My passion for maternal mental health sparked after having my daughter and I was able to fully appreciate the challenges and range of emotions that surface within parenthood from a lived experience. I then sought to specialize in Perinatal Mental Health to shift my focus from counseling children to counseling parents. When most people hear about Perinatal Mental Health, they often think of postpartum depression- but Perinatal Mental Health encompasses so much more than that! I work with women in all stages of parenthood including infertility, grief, and loss.

What does it look like for you to be seen, heard, and validated? Navigating life as a woman is challenging and presents obstacles at different stages. We carry many “hats”: mom, wife, employee, and the list goes on. In keeping up with our day-to-day lives we forsake our own mental well-being because we are taught to tend to the needs of others first. In doing so pain, resentment, and at times hopelessness creep in which makes us feel even more isolated. How can we take care of everyone else when it feels like we’re drowning?

In addition to trauma, my other passion is perinatal disorders such as postpartum depression, childbirth trauma, miscarriage /stillbirth, and infertility.
I specialize in trauma (PTSD), perinatal disorders, and couples counseling using a wide range of evidence-based modalities, including both cognitive (“talk therapy”) and neuro-based approaches (EMDR, etc.). Trauma, such as childhood abuse or neglect, sexual violence, domestic violence, etc., can create chaos in many areas of your life, including relationships, parenting, work/school performance, and even your physical health. My goal is to provide a warm and compassionate space where we can explore not just the trauma itself, but also how it intersects with other issues and patterns in your life.

Within my practice as a therapist I use a person centered and strengths based approach to meet clients where they are. In my experiences with youth and adults, I have learned that everyone desires to feel heard and seen, and often when those needs aren’t met, they may lead to unhealthy habits or a lack of healthy coping skills. Primarily I work within family systems, couples, and individuals throughout transitions or during pregnancy and postpartum periods. During therapy I assist clients in developing healthy coping skills, reframe negative thoughts, and create attainable goals.

For example, a woman with postpartum depression generally needs crisis intervention at first, while an 8 year-old may need a slow, trusting approach before any behavioral intervention.
I have worked with couples, children and families for over 25 years. In the last 20 years, I have also specialized in the treatment of women, and couples suffering from prenatal and postpartum disorders.

Life is hard (especially right now!). Many of us have encountered loss and disappointment that is oout of our control. But the difference between grief and trauma is very often the support we receive during these periods and the meaning we make of these losses. I work with clients using a highly effective, evidence based treatment called EMDR to help clear away trauma and experience more joy and ease in daily life. I have advanced training in perinatal mental health and specialize in supporting individuals and couples during the complex transition into parenthood and the losses that may accompany it.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
