Since children learn and grow best through
play
,
play therapy
can help them express their feelings, work through tough experiences, and find new self-confidence.
It’s not easy being a kid. You’re learning and growing—and the world isn’t always patient if you need to do so a little differently, or when “big feelings” get in the way. Not that being a teen or adult is easier. You might struggle under the weight of seemingly impossible expectations and stresses. Or you find yourself experiencing hurt in your relationships. Maybe you wish your child could handle their emotions better and really start to blossom. Or maybe, as a teen or adult, you want to find peace with yourself and healthy connection with others.

Every child deserves to be a child - to feel safe, loved, and to experience the world through a lens filled with wonder, joy and curiosity. When trauma occurs, it can affect every fiber of a child’s being causing chaos and disruption to their childhood. It can often feel impossible to know where to begin to start the healing process. That is why I am here - to help your child untangle and process the jumbled and complicated emotions that trauma can cause.

I take great pride in consistently maintaining an understanding of the key roles that a client’s culture, identity, ethnicity, race, gender, and other aspects of diversity
play
in the counseling process.
Thank you for your interest, but I am NOT currently accepting new clients and I have a FULL waitlist- I have a preference for utilizing many of the counseling techniques within cognitive behavioral therapy because I believe that although individuals will undoubtedly experience hardship and difficulty within their lives, I feel that problems with emotions and behaviors are many times a result of how one thinks and feels about a situation. Because I believe that counseling is not a “one-size-fits-all” process, I will always maintain awareness of the uniqueness of a client’s situation and adapt my method to suit his or her needs.

Acceptance, empathy, and respect are the core values I live by and believe necessary when establishing a safe space while walking through the challenges you are experiencing. I get it, it is hard taking the first step to seek help. You may have been going through some difficult situations for a long time, but it does not have to remain that way. I believe you are the expert of your life and I honor that by providing a sacred space for you to process your thoughts and feelings. Together, we can discover your natural ability that fosters the change you seek.

By fostering a safe relationship where clients can be free to be honest and open with themselves, I work to facilitate healing in children and their families through child-centered
play therapy
and with teens and young adults through a depth-oriented approach.
You’re tired of the anxious thoughts that plague you day and night and stop you from living the life you want to live. You feel conflicted about the emotions inside of you and have a hard time figuring out why you’re reacting in ways that don’t feel right to you. You’re tired of your past dictating your present reality and are ready for something to change. Or, your child is having a hard time communicating how they’re feeling so it shows up negatively in their behaviors at home or school. You want to connect with your child or teenager but don’t know how. They may be anxious or depressed, and you don’t know how to help.

As individuals with lives in constant flux, it can seem strange and feel scary to ask for assistance from others. Oftentimes, we resist that urge despite all signs pointing towards it. Despite that fear, when we take that step and seek assistance in life, we open ourselves to wonderful possibilities and opportunities for growth and change. As a Counselor, I find personal growth can flow both ways during therapy. learn more about others and our respective worlds that empowers us to push past barriers that we thought were impossible to breach.

Who is play therapy for?
Play therapy is generally targeted to children between the ages of 3 and 11 who have social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Play therapy has also been found helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or witnessed atrocities. Play therapy is also often recommended for children who are undergoing major medical procedures or who are suffering from chronic illness; many children’s hospitals are equipped to offer play therapy on-site. Play therapy is also sometimes used for adults; creative writing, music, and art are expressive forms that can all be adapted for therapeutic purposes.
Why do people need play therapy?
Children often do not have the language skills or words to know or to express what is troubling them. Yet they often spontaneously draw or use playthings to depict scenarios that reflect problems in their everyday life. Play therapy provides children with an array of objects and play situations to act out their feelings or experiences so that therapists can get a clear picture of what children might be struggling with and help them find solutions. In addition, play therapists are skilled at helping children understand their inner experience and find words for them, necessary steps toward helping children learn to control their own behavior and come up with solutions to problems they encounter.
What happens in play therapy?
A child enters a comfortable playroom where they are free to choose the objects they want to play with. The play therapist will typically observe how they play with the toys—whether a sandbox, puppets, dolls and action figures, trucks, costumes, drawing and painting materials, or more—because such play provides clues to a child’s family and social relationships, difficulties they are encountering in the world, and what going on inside themselves. Sometimes the therapist may ask the child to use the play objects to tell a story about their family. Using the same instruments of play, therapists can help children discover more advantageous ways of thinking and behaving.
What kinds of problems do play therapists treat?
Play therapy can help children who display destructive or self-destructive impulses; children who seem angry, sad, or fearful; children who experience frequent social, emotional, family, or school difficulty. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, who are regularly exposed to family conflict, or who have been physically or emotionally abused. Play therapy can help children who are perpetrators of bullying as well as those who are targets of bullying. It helps children learn to identify their feelings, to express them in constructive ways, and to regulate them so they can get on with the business of development.
How long does play therapy last?
Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and they usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Each session is tailored to the individual child and the kinds of problems they are struggling with. Play that is highly repetitive often indicates a problem requiring further exploration. Therapists typically measure progress through session-to-session changes in play behavior.
