Every
grief
journey is unique, and it's important to find what works for you.
If you've lost a spouse, parent, child, sibling or beloved animal companion, you may be wondering whether the tears will ever stop, whether you will ever be able to remember them without feeling empty, or whether you are grieving "normally." Their last days and hours haunt you, stealing your sleep and wrecking your appetite. Your family and friends offer what they think are encouraging words, but it just makes you feel worse. You don't want to hear "sorry for your
loss
," or that your loved one is "in a better place." You just want them back and no one can give you that, so how are you ever supposed to feel happy again?

Life is hard. And wonderful and beautiful and joyful. Sometimes the “hard” gets in the way of experiencing the many positives life has to offer. Therapy can help. It is my privilege to make space for your many emotions as you deal with the “hard.” I provide a nonjudgmental, compassionate presence where you can share openly about your journey, process feelings, and explore strengths you may have forgotten you have. I come to private practice following more than 20 years with hospice. I have extensive experience supporting people through life’s difficulties, including
grief
, life transitions, adjustment, anxiety, and depression.

When working with grieving families I provide parental
grief
support, allowing a safe space to process your
grief
and learn how to meet your child’s developmental and grieving needs.
Asking for help can be hard and you’re brave to be here, taking the first step. I believe that you are the expert of your life and I want to honor that. My goal is to create a welcoming space that allows you to safely process your feelings and learn more about who you are. Some issues we may focus on include the
death
of a loved one, trauma, depression, anxiety, and/or parenting support. I have served people across the lifespan; meeting children, adolescents, and adults where they are in their journey. As an EMDR Certified Therapist together we can process feelings, memories, and trauma that may be too difficult to manage alone.

I work with adults who are in highly stressful professions but who are also often in need of being seen and understood as persons with identities outside of their professional roles. Many of my clients have hidden depression, anxiety, trauma,
grief
and relationship stressors. I have over thirty years of experience in helping individuals reach healthy solutions to their complex problems. I provide a safe place to explore the many facets of my clients' complex identities.

Kimberly D. Williams

Kimberly specializes in the treatment of anxiety,
grief
and women’s issues.
For many of life’s issues, it is helpful to talk with someone within a nonjudgmental, safe environment. To be listened to and heard in a way that facilitates an understanding of what the underlying origin of the problem is in order to bring about healing. Kimberly uses the psychodynamic approach to counseling as a means to assist clients with understanding themselves more deeply. Serving adults, couples and adolescents, she collaborates with the client to address patterns and behaviors that disrupt wellbeing.

Therapy can feel like a scary step to take. Even more it can be a struggle to just share one's needs/stories. Which is why Diego and I work with each of our Clients in making that fear go away and assisting everyone in feeling comfortable and at ease. One of the first priorities I focus on is working with that fear, that uncomfortable feeling--It Gets Better. Diego is an amazing asset to this team as he will provide comfort to those who experience anxiety during therapy. He can provide decompression for those working through trauma or those experiencing sensory challenges.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
