Taylor Mayfield
Clinical Social Work/Therapist, MSSW, LCSW-A
I have a cognitive behavioral approach to emphasize the power of our thoughts, feelings, and actions while utilizing methods from the Gottman Institute, Emotionally Focused Couple’s Therapy, and
Family
Systems Theory.
Over the last 5 years, I have experience working within the pre-marital, marital, parental and dissolution of a relationship. I understand the importance of relationships throughout life and utilize my skills to assist parents, couples, and families in building healthy, long-lasting relationships. It is a natural occurrence in all relationships to have periods of highs and lows. Oftentimes the stressors of life make it difficult to heal from the lows and transform your marriage with life’s changing stages.

I primarily use Internal
Family
Systems to help identify the internal attachment of faulty thoughts and emotions by exploring ways to "detach" and live your life with purpose.
Are you having trouble adjusting to life transitions? Are you bothered that you aren't good enough? Are you concerned that having emotionally immature parents has caused you to struggle in adulthood? Your experiences with transitions could become overwhelming, causing a lack of focus, a decrease in self-esteem, and second-guessing yourself. Imagine if you could understand why you struggle to make changes or adapt to circumstances you can't avoid. Imagine understanding the impact of a lack of emotional maturity or intimacy.

Every child yearns to be seen, heard, and understood. My goal with our time is that your child feels more connected with their inner world and more confident in speaking for their needs. My style of counseling is particularly effective with children experiencing worries and having a hard time self-regulating and/or listening to their body. I want to support you (the care-taker) and your little one. Through our relationship, communication will improve, self-esteem will boost, we will practice mindfulness and autonomy, and problem solving. I have a specialty in building emotional intelligence in children with autoimmune disorders.

I have a passion for families struggling w/ blended
family
issues, addiction or mental illness.
"...healing means, first of all, the creation of an empty but friendly space where those who suffer can tell their story to someone who can listen with real attention..." (Henri Nouwen). My desire in counseling is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for one to tell their story, to go deeper and discover the their own personal way of being human and the way they want to go. As Henri Nouwen says, "Quite often it is our fear for the hidden moments in our own history that keeps us paralyzed."

Finding the right therapist can be frustrating and overwhelming. It does not have to be. I believe that each person has the ability within themselves to achieve their goals, and the role of a therapist is to help navigate them through the obstacles in their paths to happiness. I use this person-centered lens to integrate interventions from multiple therapeutic approaches to best assist my clients during their journey. I am a North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and a South Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPCA). As well as a National Board Certified Counselor (NCC).

My background as a Marriage &
Family Therapist
helps me view your concerns through the context of your life & relationships.
Life is challenging at times. Maintaining healthy relationships may feel the like the greatest challenge of all! Our relationships are influenced by our childhood,
family
, & life experiences. Relationships take work! They can be overwhelming with the intensity of different emotions we experience, and sometimes this leads to make choices that can be unhealthy for us. Isolation, infidelity, & substance use hold us back from having a fulfilling relationship with ourselves & with others. Through exploring our challenges, accepting who we are in this moment, & leaning into the opportunity for growth we can Embrace all life has to offer!

Hello. I'm a clinical psychologist who has practiced in the Charlotte area since 1994. I primarily provide psychological services to children, adolescents, and their families, but I see an occasional adult as well. In addition to providing counseling services, I conduct comprehensive psychological and psycho-educational evaluations that help in making confident diagnoses and help to direct treatment and/or educational decisions. My testing evaluations include assessments for ADHD, learning disabilities, IQ, eligibility for school/testing accommodations, behavioral concerns, social concerns, and emotional concerns such as anxiety, OCD, and depression.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
