Childhood comes with ups and downs for
children
and the parents who are figuring it out alongside them.
Children
show us their concerns through their behaviors. As a parent you may be unsure of what to do or say to help your
child
in difficult moments and sometimes your own childhood experiences may be interfering in your parenting journey. Parents come to me when they want to improve the parent-
child
relationship after a trauma or stressor, want help with reducing their
child
's anxiety, are unsure of how to manage their
child
's big feelings and behavioral reactions and/or want to break generational cycles in their parenting.

In my work with
children
and adults, I bring a background of 33 years in the martial arts with a recent emphasis on Tai Chi and the meditative healing arts.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist who has been helping people in the Charlotte area make essential changes in their lives for 21years. I believe that a frank and gentle approach which values the therapeutic relationship is the key to facilitate individual change. My approach is an active one in which I work with the client to find resources and experiences that create a sense of hope within. I have two major areas of focus: life span issues in adults; adjustment problems in
children
and adolescents. With each group I cultivate a sense of humor and an ability to play as part of my therapy.

Experience, experience, experience. As a psychologist with over 35 years serving adults,
children
, adolescents, couples, and families, I understand that "well begun is half done" which points to the importance of respecting each individual's unique starting point in therapy. I have a distinct health orientation based in science which suggests that most emotional distress is ultimately stress-related. Therefore, emotional balance and well-being is inherently available to most individuals. Ultimately, most of us find that quality emotional work pays off.

I welcome
children
, adolescents, and adults to therapy.
Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. If you are looking for things to change and are willing to work with me, things can get better. So many clients enter therapy with apprehension and a lack of hope for things to improve. I focus my practice on creating trust and getting my clients back on track as quickly and as comfortably as possible. Therapy begins with an end in mind and you and I would work together to make sure we are always making progress towards goals.

Taking the step to find someone to help with your
child
's mental health needs shows the love and care you have for your
child
.
It is no secret that parenting is hard. When you add your
child
’s mental health and/or behavioral health needs into the mix it can add another level of complexity.
Children
and adolescents often have difficulty managing their emotional responses, have limited communication skills, and limited coping strategies; this can impact how they engage in the world around them. I would like to help your
child
feel more in control and confident to take on whatever the world hands them.

We assume that childhood is a carefree happy time but for some
children
and teens, anxiety robs them of this joy. If your
child
can't sleep alone, is afraid to try new things or can't tolerate mistakes, they may be struggling with anxiety. If your teen avoids social events, struggles to go to school or worries incessantly about other's opinions, their worries may be overwhelming them. Even overachievers who look like they have everything under control may be stressed by their perfectionism or need to please others. Some kids develop rituals in response to obsessions or compulsions. If this sounds like your
child
, I can help!

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
