My approach to therapy is attachment based psychoanalysis with a trauma focus. All humans have the basic fundamental need to be loved, be seen, and be heard. Our beliefs, feelings, behavior patterns, and relational dynamics are driven by these needs before we could articulate. We learned about our world through our first relationships and these subconscious attachments. We work with the subconscious, identify how your attachment reinforces choices, and unworked through feelings. You may not have an identified traumatic experience; rather, you experienced an event that was too complex to process at that time. EMDR trained.

Is self doubt holding you back from achieving the things you desire? If so, you are not alone. This is a common reason people seek therapy. I strive to support individuals in enhancing their self esteem to improve their quality of life. I also work with individuals experiencing anxiety, unresolved issues from the past and other life stressors such as career challenges, peer and family related concerns and life transitions. I believe that you have the answers within. My goal is to help guide you in discovering what may be keeping you “stuck.” We will work together to achieve self awareness, establish peace and confidence within.

Have you ever felt you have set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm? I was introduced to this analogy to describe how one can make themselves uncomfortable for the comfort of others. Being a support for others has always been my passion and I want to help you to uncover thoughts, feelings, and patterns that are no longer working in your life. You are not alone. I work with adults from all backgrounds that struggle with depression, anxiety, loss, relationship issues, or just feeling overwhelmed and desires more effective ways to cope.

Does your child have trouble focusing or performing in school? Are you looking for parent strategies to better support your child’s needs? Are you concerned with your child's mental health or development? As a parent/caregiver, your natural instinct is to provide support for your child, although knowing the "what" or "how" is not always clear. All behavior communicates something. Whether it is a skill deficit, learned pattern, or underlying symptom, determining what lies behind the behavior is the first step to supporting it. You bring the experience as the parent and together we will determine the "what," "why," and "how."

No two therapeutic journeys are alike. They reflect the unique interactions of the individuals involved in the process. Therapist and patient enter into a relationship through which, when things go well, "more" becomes possible: more life, more love, more play, more feelings, more thought, more choice, more reflection. Specializing in work with adult survivors of childhood & adolescent sexual abuse, I combine psychodynamic, developmental, and trauma perspectives. The past can truly become past and the present freed to become reflective of the genuine talents, hopes, yearnings of the person with whom I journey.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
