Is life overwhelming and confusing for you? Are you tired of being stuck in a cycle of problematic behaviors such as excessive
alcohol use
that make things worse? Trauma can leave you trapped in a never-ending storm of pain, anxiety, and sadness. Everything seems uncertain, and even simple tasks become too difficult to handle. The pain you feel can be intense, and sometimes it can feel like your wounds will never heal. But deep down you still have a little hope that things can get better, and you long for peace and healing. I want to tell you that healing is possible and you don't have to face this alone.

I have experience providing both brief and long-term counseling for a wide variety of issues including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, substance and
alcohol use
, relationship stress, trauma and PTSD, and more.
Counseling is a voluntary and collaborative process. This requires that you be actively involved and willing to set and work toward specific goals. Counseling is a tool that individuals can use to deal with problems in a way that is best for that individual. Your counselor cannot “fix,” “cure,” or “heal” you in any way. However, unconditional acceptance, listening and understanding, professional expertise, and honest communication can help you reach your goals to achieving a happier, healthier life!

My approach is rooted in the belief that with awareness, knowledge, and effort you can be empowered to live the life you desire and manifest your goals. I will work with you to develop a stronger, more accepting sense of self through mindfulness, challenging negative cognitions, and validation. I deem myself a counselor, rather than a therapist, one who provides counsel through education, support, guidance, and feedback, with a more directive and accountable approach than a therapeutic exploration of one’s emotional experience. By providing "bumpers," we can work together to identify and dismantle the barriers to your intentions.

Now accepting in person and evening appointments: You have always felt capable but now it is hard to feel motivated. You can't find the energy to care anymore but deep down you really care. You want to get over this. It feels like you are under the weight of a lot of pressure and stress. You no longer feel like the strong person you once saw yourself as. You have always been the person others lean on, which makes it hard to ask for help. You are trying to survive. Managing the emotions and inner criticism can be exhausting.

Okay, so I'm thinking if you're here looking for a therapist, maybe you feel like your life has become a complete shit show. Or maybe you're just so sick and tired of the same old, same old, but you don't know how to stop or change it. Or maybe you feel frozen in time by the trauma you experienced in your life. Maybe you feel so stuck that any sort of hopeful, positive, and rewarding future is completely out of your reach. OR maybe it's something else like the inability to manage your emotions, or stop using, or push past the storm or grief.

Many of us are navigating change beyond what we prepared for. When our relationships become a source of stress, rather than the calming connection we seek out, our nervous systems protest, using coping styles designed for combat, not for love. We can push our partner away at the very same moment we need them the most. Are you worn from repeating negative patterns, longing for a clearer map to communicating needs? Marriages are healthiest when couples become shelter for each other, removing blocks to a satisfying bond. Using 30 years experience, I provide couples with personalized tools for more effective, satisfyiing relationships.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
