Think of your life as a story. Who is the Author?
My role as your therapist is to empower you as the author of your own story; you have more say over who you are than you might have been led to believe. I encourage people to seek and make room for knowledge that lives within you, bringing together inner wisdom and practices from peer-reviewed research. You deserve to receive care that celebrates your individual strengths, and builds on them in a sustainable way.

John is an active member of the contemporary psychoanalytic-based International Psychotherapy Institute. He deeply appreciates the complexities of our feelings and thoughts, how the mind and body intersect, and the effect of early lived experiences. John values the depth of introspection and compassion held in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theories. They address our root issues, in contrast to other therapies that focus on solving particular problems or symptoms. John works with individuals to develop inner capacities that can improve relationships and foster a more vitalized life.

We all, at some point, may struggle with the "why's" of life. We ask: "Why did this have to happen to me?" or "Why do I keep making this same mistake?" Perhaps you are caring for children or family members with special circumstances or needs, and you are struggling just to keep your head above water. We can find ourselves in positions that seem irreversible or unfixable, but know this: you do not have to navigate them alone.

My ideal clients are… individuals, couples and adolescents who seek to restore balance and find joy in their bodies, lives, relationships and communications.
I’m an IFS Therapist. We believe we all have inner “parts” that hold wisdom. When we connect with these parts, they know how to heal. I help you recognize how they respond and react, understand their intentions, and build a relationship with them—so your healing process can begin. This concept is applied to individual and couples therapy.

You've probably already done some therapy. You left feeling heard, even affirmed for fifty minutes, and somehow nothing changed. You know the vocabulary. You've read the books. You can name it all precisely. And you're still searching.
You don't need someone to nod sympathetically and gently reflect. I call a thing what it is and tell you what I think. But directness is only part of it. I care just as much about sitting with the pain and anger underneath. I'll follow you into the parts of the story most therapists quietly redirect. I want to hear the darkness, the complexity, and the places that are hardest to say out loud.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
