Those with ADHD often believe that they are flawed and broken.
As a certified ADHD Coach and Consultant with extensive training, I help my clients understand their unique brain wiring and develop supportive strategies. My clients typically struggle with executive function issues such as task initiation, time management, impulsivity, emotional flexibility, prioritizing, and procrastination. Their goals range from wanting to be more organized and less forgetful to being a better communicator in relationships and being able to tackle the boring aspects of their job. My clients want to feel whole, to let go of the shame that can come with ADHD , but also appreciate its gifts.

I created Beacon Light Counseling in order to support teen, young adult, and adult populations suffering from a variety of issues including (but not limited to): ADHD , anger, anxiety, depression, family and interpersonal relationships, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, oppositional behavior, and trauma.
My number one job as a counselor is to create a relaxed environment that is devoid of judgement. I don't want therapy to be some terrible place where you have anxiety about just showing up. In fact, I would like it to to be a place where you (shockingly) enjoy coming! Ultimately, our work together is to help you better understand your story, your vulnerabilities, and your strengths. Let’s face it, no one wants to talk about their vulnerabilities if they are being judged... sounds like a terrible time to me. My goal is to simply help you in your journey to find more fulfillment and peace in your life.

Is your child an artsy and creative type, who beats to the sound of their own drum? Do their classmates or teachers not “get” them, which is taking a hit to their confidence? Your child has ADHD or Asperger's.
You are thinking to yourself: “I’ve tried it all. I don’t know what else to do. I’m tired, they aren’t listening and I’m over it… the calls from school, the looks from neighbors, the whispers from family.” Nothing has worked. They are angry, frustrated and alone. They feel like a failure- and sometimes you do to. All you want is for your child to be happy. Yet it feels like you’ve tried it all without success. Your child just refuses to listen to you, lashes out and seems to view you as their biggest enemy. To make matters worse, your child has increasingly become more isolated and sad. Things need to improve right away, but how?

It's as if you are walking on egg shells every single day. Your child is controlling, bossy, stubborn and strong-willed. You've given up on 'my way or the high way' because the tantrums are just no longer worth it. Your son or daughter has ADHD , Aspergers, or is Gifted. You need help. You are looking for answers and solutions- and need immediate support to get back in charge. Some days it is absolutely exhausting- and other days it is so easy! There's the battles, the refusing to wear certain clothes, picky eating, not doing chores, not listening, not doing homework, acting out and the list goes on.

I have personal and professional experience with anxiety, depression, autism/Asperger's disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, and work/stress related concerns.
The world is changing-how are you coping? In the "new normal" it's hard to see what lies ahead. Depression and anxiety, stress, worries about the future are becoming a part of life. Your emotions take you for a roller coaster ride every day. Your memory is not what it should be. You notice that you are angry more often than usual and you are worried how this is affecting your family and maybe even your job performance. Or perhaps you are a family member of someone with these struggles and are needing direction, support, and another point of view.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
