Most people love what they are good at and are good at what they love. I love being a therapist. I have been professionally involved in psychology for 40+ years, and it remains one of my principal passions. When I look into my heart and grasp what has mattered most in my life, I have a deep sense of gratitude for the people I've helped. I chose psychology as a profession not only because it matches my temperament but also because it's a profession that can be developed over a lifetime and improved with age and experience.

The world is a bit nuts. Sometimes, it's not you; it's them. Maybe you're feeling misunderstood. Maybe a trauma led to feeling distress. Maybe it's not an event but how you experience it. Maybe you want meaning and purpose. Any of those are painful; they lead to self-doubt, distraction, depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, feelings of loss, shame, and that you’re adrift. I've felt these feelings before and it's no fun. You deserve contentment now. I have lots of tools to help with this, but ultimately, I simply listen with an open mind, compassion and curiosity. Most of my work is with men and men's issues, but I see all genders.

My focus is to assist children, adolescents, families, and adults to build positive self-image through enhancing self-esteem, improving social skills, and reducing family and peer conflicts. I work closely with parents to strengthen their limit setting, clear expectations, and conflict resolution abilities through improved communication skills. Setting limits and boundaries in all relationships and dynamics is a tool that I often use in my therapeutic process. Giving children, parents, couples and individuals tools to maneuver through the daily issues are tools and techniques that I focus on in our sessions.

Are you having trouble adjusting to life transitions? Are you bothered that you aren't good enough? Are you concerned that having emotionally immature parents has caused you to struggle in adulthood? Your experiences with transitions could become overwhelming, causing a lack of focus, a decrease in self-esteem, and second-guessing yourself. Imagine if you could understand why you struggle to make changes or adapt to circumstances you can't avoid. Imagine understanding the impact of a lack of emotional maturity or intimacy.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
