As someone who's experienced their own
trauma
in the military, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, life is hard.
Never feeling good enough is so DAMN hard! Doubting yourself at every turn, questioning every decision you make, and finding yourself in unhealthy, painful relationships has been the story of your life so far. You're struggling and you want connection, but you don't know how to ask for help. You may be reaching out for support in the wrong places like FB or Instagram. Sweeping things under the rug hasn't been working. You may have been told that you have to be strong all the time and that asking for help is a weakness. I'm here to tell you that's bullshit, and that Therapy Is DOPE! Therapy is so much more than talking.

I have experience working with a wide variety of concerns, including
trauma
, family conflict, grief, depression, immigration, and multiracial/biracial/mixed issues.
You have faced and overcome painful challenges in your life, but something about this one hits you differently. Perhaps you're feeling stressed, discouraged, and unsure about where to go from here. You are hoping to move more toward growth and wellness, and are prepared to seek some extra support. However, deciding to begin counseling can be a difficult decision full of discomfort and nerves. I aim to eliminate some of this by establishing a strong working relationship with you in which we initially move at your pace. We will collaborate together on your unique goals and ways to reach them.

PTSD
, and more. I take a collaborative approach, meeting you where you are at, while also exploring other underlying factors that could be associated with present day stressors. Together, we will focus on the past and present to help build for a well balanced future.

I am trained to use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to treat
trauma
.
After 25 years of working in the field primarily offering individual therapy, I am now most interested in group therapy. My co-therapist and I offer two groups currently. One group has openings and is an ongoing psychotherapy group. There is nothing quite like the magic of therapy group. Group immediately effects feelings of isolation, loneliness and supports healthy connections. Group can normalize human needs for a sense of belonging and support during these most uncertain times. I am accepting new patients and I hope to keep my practice relational with a strong focus on couples, families and group therapy.

trauma

Finding the right therapist can be frustrating and overwhelming. It does not have to be. I believe that each person has the ability within themselves to achieve their goals, and the role of a therapist is to help navigate them through the obstacles in their paths to happiness. I use this person-centered lens to integrate interventions from multiple therapeutic approaches to best assist my clients during their journey. I am a North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and a South Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPCA). As well as a National Board Certified Counselor (NCC).

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
