Life is a journey that can often become difficult to maneuver. However, facing life's struggles can empower us to be the people we are intended to be. This process is often mentally and physically exhausting. I would be honored to walk alongside you, your child, and/or your
family
on your personal journey of self-discovery. I love children and specialize in non-directive play therapy with children 3-7 years of age. Additionally, I work with adolescents and teens navigating the often difficult times of transition through middle/high school. Finally, I have a heart to work with women in life transitions.

Perhaps you aren't where you envisioned yourself at this stage in your life, or feel like you're constantly falling short. As a therapist, my greatest passion is providing a fresh perspective and working with clients as they learn to navigate these difficulties and rediscover what it feels like to be happy.

Every now and then, we are faced with challenges that are difficult to handle on our own. Sometimes these can be very overwhelming and feelings of loneliness, confusion or depression enter into our lives. If this is you, and talking with your spouse, friend or
family
member isn't getting you where you'd like to be, it might be time to give therapy a try. I conduct therapy in a manner that enables you to understand present patterns, identify and remove constraints, and achieve better functioning and enhanced growth.

I have over a decade of experience helping
family
members feel better about themselves, work and life.
Welcome, looking for someone that is warm, direct and knowledgeable. You found it! I obtained my MSW in 2013, from Rhode Island College. Following my graduation, I worked at a Psychiatric Residential Facility where I learned the benefits of ACT, CBT, TF-CBT and DBT modalities. In 2015, I moved to Mecklenburg County Public Health, where I worked alongside CMPD providing therapeutic support to families that experienced acute and prolonged trauma exposure. During my tenure in Public Health Department, I honed my skills in somatic approach, such as EMDR and Brainspotting, to help the individual improve their mental health.

Child & adolescent clinicians, career counselors, and couples &
family therapy
specialists allow for a variety of services under one roof.
No two therapeutic journeys are alike. They reflect the unique interactions of the individuals involved in the process. Therapist and patient enter into a relationship through which, when things go well, "more" becomes possible: more life, more love, more play, more feelings, more thought, more choice, more reflection.
Specializing in work with adult survivors of childhood & adolescent sexual abuse, I combine psychodynamic, developmental, and trauma perspectives. The past can truly become past and the present freed to become reflective of the genuine talents, hopes, yearnings of the person with whom I journey.

You've found disappointment because your life does not look the way you thought it would. Perhaps you are dealing with a major loss that has you feeling like a bomb went off in your life. Or perhaps you dreamed life would look a certain way and feel left behind, unfulfilled and unsure what you want moving forward. Or perhaps you are struggling to adjust to a life change. Even if your life looks good on the outside, you feel empty and hopeless. You cannot shake a nagging worry or sadness, and your friends and
family
might not understand how much your life feels like a battle. You feel alone, but you do not need to suffer in silence.

Preston uses a Strengths-Based approach which seeks to amplify the strengths and areas of resilience within the patient to tackle other challenges they are facing, as well as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Structural
Family Therapy
, Solution-Focused Therapy, Crisis De-Escalation, and Motivational Interviewing.
Preston believes that the process of therapy works best when a patient is motivated for change and can engage in honest self-reflection. He has learned over the past seven years as a lead therapist that one of the most important factors that predict success in therapy is the alignment and therapeutic rapport between the therapist and the patient. Preston may give direction and advice if solicited, but he believes the patient possesses the internal strength and direction to improve life satisfaction and mental well-being.

We can sometimes get stuck in negative ways of thinking after a difficult life event, a strained
family
dynamic, or the loss of a relationship. Clients often come to me with thoughts like “I will never be good enough” or “I have to be perfect to succeed.” You may turn to dieting/overexercising, self-harm, or using substances to cope with these painful thoughts. You may feel guilt and shame for thinking and feeling this way. We get lost in the shuffle of everyday life and start prioritizing others’ needs above our own, sacrificing our own self-worth. We think maybe, just maybe, if I can make others around me happy, all will be okay.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
