Are you living or just existing? Do you find yourself drowning in depression as happiness slowly slips away from you and pleasure is nowhere to be found? Do you feel trapped, stuck, alone, and lifeless as your thoughts fill with cries of helplessness and hopelessness? Are you often worried and lack confidence in areas, which you use to thrive? Do you want to regain the motivation and energy to get out of bed and gain control over the life you once enjoyed? Depression is like a blindfold that holds us captive in our minds and you can't see your way out no matter where you turn.

Meet Tinkerbell, my 5 lb. Maltese and Hunter, my 115 lb. German Shepherd. I grew up on a farm and animals are incredibly important to me. They teach us so much about ourselves and have the capacity to unconditionally love us and at times, they can really challenge us. That's what therapy is all about - unconditional positive regard and pushing us to be our best selves. I work with females; teens to adulthood and their families. Anxiety, depression, trauma, self-harm behaviors, relational issues, and emotional challenges are among my specialties. I love helping those find their purpose, path, and inspiration!

As a psychologist with over 20 years' experience, I work with people who are struggling with diverse challenges, from temporarily overwhelming stressors to life-altering losses or burdens. Complicated or unsatisfactory relationships, difficult life transitions, health concerns, and significant losses are common problems that, if left unresolved, can lead to depression, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy, helplessness, or hopelessness. My goal is to provide you with a safe, non-judgmental environment to explore your concerns. I offer insight, support, and guidance, while helping you develop strategies to navigate life's challenges and cope effectively with the difficulties you are facing.

These feelings can cause distance in relationships, negatively impact your mood, and can lead to developing unhealthy coping mechanisms such as addiction or isolation. If this resonates with you, you certainly are not alone and I’m glad you found this page.

At times, it can be difficult to feel in control, stay motivated, and find fulfillment despite all the pressures from our society and those we develop for ourselves. We arrive at more trying moments at different points in life, and all meet these challenges with unique experiences, beliefs, circumstances, and minds. Many of us are struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, confusion about goals for our future, low self-esteem, body image issues, and relationship difficulties. An effort to deal with one obstacle can lead to developing habits and ways of coping that create new difficulties in another area.

Exciting developments in neurobiology are showing that we can make physiological changes to our brains that impact persistent negative thought processes, depression and anxiety.
One of my favorite movie lines is spoken by Melvin Udall (played by Jack Nicholson) who barges into his therapist's waiting area and asks a room full of patients, "What if this is as good as it gets?!" Do you find yourself asking that same question? Have you settled for an existence well below that of your dreams? Do you feel that change is out of your reach? Have you fallen prey to believing the negative things you say to yourself? It doesn't have to be this way.

I have specific training in treating individuals with Complex Trauma, Dissociative Disorders, Addictive Processes, Depression and Anxiety, Life Transitions and Existential Crises.
Do you feel stuck or lost much of the time, but also have an innate ability to recognize that you want and deserve more out of life, out of your relationships, perhaps more out of yourself? Do you want to participate in a deep dive of possible unconscious material that may be holding you back? Being able to open up about these vulnerabilities is challenging and involves deep exploration into the psyche. My intention is to create a safe, accepting container so you are able to explore all parts of yourself, welcome them and integrate them into your life.

I work to help adults overcome and take control of depression in many different ways.
How would it feel to be free from anxiety that keeps thoughts running through your mind all day long? How would your life change if you didn't have to experience depression or the sadness that keeps you unmotivated which leads to you beating yourself up? I imagine when you're at work or at home you may look like you're doing fine to everyone else, but inside you feel overwhelmed and consumed with negativity. I wonder if your feelings may even have your self esteem in a rough place leaving you feeling hopeless. The best thing about this is that anxiety and depression can be managed through empathy, effort, and a few techniques.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
