Making sense of trauma, anxiety, relationships, and complex emotions can often lead to confusion and shame. You may feel lost in painful cycles, held back by negative voices, or filled with self-doubt. Meeting with a counselor can help you find clarity and renew confidence. As vulnerable as it is to invite someone else into your story, it’s hard to untangle your inner web of thoughts and feelings on your own. I provide counseling services for women and
teen
girls who need compassionate and practical support navigating life’s challenges.

Are you a parent concerned about your teens shift in behavior or mood? You may be confused whether it is "regular
teen
" stuff or something more. You miss your happy, carefree child and wonder if they will ever enjoy life again. Imagine what it would be like for them to have their confidence back and skills to manage difficult situations and emotions in the future. Your
teen
would feel better about themselves and parents could breath easier knowing their children have the skills to cope and know when and how to ask for help. Life transitions are hard, whether it's going to or graduating from college. It's okay to ask for help.

We assume that childhood is a carefree happy time but for some children and teens, anxiety robs them of this joy. If your child can't sleep alone, is afraid to try new things or can't tolerate mistakes, they may be struggling with anxiety. If your
teen
avoids social events, struggles to go to school or worries incessantly about other's opinions, their worries may be overwhelming them. Even overachievers who look like they have everything under control may be stressed by their perfectionism or need to please others. Some kids develop rituals in response to obsessions or compulsions. If this sounds like your child, I can help!

As an EMDR trained therapist together we can process feelings, memories, and trauma that may be too difficult to manage alone.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
