" Therapy is coming to know oneself better through a healing and restorative relationship .
The people I work with are motivated, bright, insightful and often appear to have it all together to the outside world but inside feel anxious and/or depressed, filled with self-doubt and stuck. Some had difficult childhoods in families that lacked emotional closeness where they learned to ignore and discount their feelings. Others say their insides and their outsides don't match and it's become too painful to continue this way. I work with people who want to shed behaviors like people-pleasing, doing too much, and placing more importance on other's needs than their own.

At Greenwood Therapy I provide collaborative, strengths-based counseling for people dealing with depression, anxiety, and related disorders; trauma and grief; relationship problems; difficult transitions; and career questions. I work with individuals 18 years and older and with couples . My approach varies based on the client's needs, using insights from interpersonal and psychodynamic therapy, narrative and family systems therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based stress management. I have particular experience with issues facing clients in blended families and long-distance relationships; and I understand the challenges of changing direction in midlife, partly because counseling is my second career.

As an experienced couples therapist, I believe that Gottman and Emotionally Focused therapy improve communication and intimacy in relationships.
Do you feel frustrated and disconnected from your partner no matter what you do? You may be fed up with conversations that start hours long arguments or feel shut down and ignored if you bring up your concerns. Maybe you're replaying the arguments over and over in your mind wondering how it could have been said in a way that would help resolve the issue. Maybe you're finding it difficult to sleep and/or focus. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to stop arguing. Most of all, you’re ready to feel seen, heard, and connected!

Just like Forrest Gump says “Life is like a box of chocolates…you never know what you are going to get.” Life will be filled with joys, it will be filled with sorrows, and I don’t even know what is happening anymore but I am going along for the ride. With all these experiences we would like to share it with someone whether a close friend, a family member, or our spouse / partner . But…there are some things that we get stuck in life not being able to process, or our supporters might not understand. That we might need to reach for outside help, which is okay. I can be that person you reach out to.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
