Hello! I am Tara, and I am grateful to be part of your journey. I work with children and adolescents who may be struggling with stress and anxiety, low self-esteem, social difficulties, perfectionism, and grief. I work with adults seeking support and motivation through life transitions, navigating achievement culture, or feeling disconnected from themselves, their purpose, or others. I believe learning often happens best through play and connection, positive change is most supported when you are an active participant in the process, and, although failure is inevitable, through failure can come resilience.

After practicing law for over 10 years, I returned to a path I was on prior to attending law school. While using my legal background to open and run a mental health facility in Asheville in 2019, I reconnected with my passion for being a helper and facilitator. I have found that it is truly my heart’s desired path. I am deeply honored to sit with people as they tell their stories, gain insight, have release, and work towards their goals of growth and healing.

Adult Autism Evaluations! I know you hate phone calls, schedule directly through my website! Have you been resonating with the autistic experience that you're seeing others talk about? Are you suffering from autistic burnout after a lifetime of heavily masking? Do you hold yourself to ridiculously high standards, and feel defeated when things don’t go perfectly? Is your connection with others not quite what you pictured it being? Does work completely exhaust you, but you can’t quite find a job that lights you up?

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist with over 35 years of experience I believe you are coming to me as a fellow pilgrim, journeying toward healing that comes when deepest concerns are shared safely with another human being. My approach invites reflection and the creation of a space where you can move at your own pace. When you tell me your story which may be painful, even terrible for you, I desire to stay with you and provide emotional presence especially when the going gets rough.

Life can be difficult and confusing. I am here to help you sort through the pain to find hope and healing for the days ahead. The hurt can be deep, going back to earliest memories or coming from present hardships. Counseling you is about establishing a safe place, a loving environment of grace. My tools come from my training and from 33 years of experience, but each person is exquisitely unique, so no therapeutic relationship is the same as any other. It is an honor and privilege to share deeply in your life and the lives of your family. At present, because of a recent move to another state, I am connecting only online or by cell.

I was drawn to social work out of my desire to understand and empathize with human suffering. I believe that all of us, at some point in our lives, can benefit from healing therapy sessions. The bulk of my career has been in Hospice care, although I've been in private practice for approximately 10 years. We can grieve over the changes in life that don't always involve a death, such as postpartum, divorce, empty nest and caring for our parents. I can help to cope with these transitions as well. I also have experience counseling those with depression and anxiety.

If you find yourself struggling with feeling overwhelmed by so many life demands that you are unable to tend to your own needs, I can help you to recognize what is contributing to getting stuck and learn ways to get your life back. You may be immobilized by old, self-defeating habits, being driven by "shoulds", fears of being judged by others, or a general sense that taking time to take care of yourself will result in negative consequences. This likely impacts the quality of your relationships, health, and your sense of empowerment.

I believe in the quiet brilliance that lives within everyone. A light that may flicker beneath exhaustion, doubt, or the weight of being everything to everyone, but never entirely goes out. You are the steady one, the go-to, the fixer of things. Yet in still moments, the whisper comes:
"What if they find out I’m barely holding on?" Here, you are invited to lay it all down.
To exhale.
To listen inward, my mission is to help you return to your own knowing—the fierce, intuitive, radiant self that may have been buried beneath roles, expectations, and the noise of the world.

When faced with anxiety or depression, you often wonder if there is anything you can do to truly feel better or transform yourself. It seems like you’ve tried everything, and nothing has worked. Strong emotions are causing other issues -trouble relating with others, over/under eating, problems with work or family relationships or even more serious issues. At times, relationship struggles leave you wondering "should I stay or go?" but it can be hard to navigate this alone. The "real you" is in there, but hard to find. Life's challenges sometimes require a confidential, safe perspective and a space to release old burdens.

In today's world, it often feels like there's no room to be your true self. You might find yourself editing conversations, holding back, and closing off from others because you fear they won't accept the real you. The stakes are high, and the fear of rejection can lead to suffering in silence. But what if you could live fearlessly and unapologetically as yourself? Imagine knowing who you are and embracing the possibilities of who you might become. Picture pursuing your joy freely and feeling in control, confident in your ability to handle whatever comes your way.

How can I find a therapist in Brevard?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
