Clear, Resolve, Transform. I help clients discover and resolve subconscious causes for emotionaI and behavioral difficulties. The Subconscious controls emotions, desires, memory, habits, thoughts, dreams, and automatic responses. One may consciously understand the value of eliminating problematic emotions, thoughts or behaviors but unless the Subconscious Mind is reached, enduring change is unlikely. I address the underlying subconscious blocks to living a clear and free life. I have effectively treated sexual abuse , trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, phobias, addictions and more. Issues are cleared, clients report being able to function with more energy and clarity. Relationships thrive and lives are transformed.

I am a transpersonal therapist focused on healing the split associated with trauma. Trauma can disconnect a person from their original truth and create a disconnect in the mind-body and spirit of a person. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and the Inner Counselor are two highly effective approaches I offer. I see clients with panic disorder and depression, sexual abuse , abusive relationships, codependency and self-esteem issues and more. Bringing health and balance back around areas that have become compulsions (eating, sex, alcohol, relationships, etc.) is another important part of this personal healing journey.

I trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing to treat trauma survivors ( sexual abuse , domestic violence, childhood abuse/neglect).
Life can be wonderful, but it can also be messy and difficult at times. I work with people who face a variety of challenges, including anxiety, depression, and life changes. I believe that every person is unique, and I bring respect for that uniqueness into the therapeutic relationship. I am continually fascinated at the complexity, creativity, and resiliency of people. It is my hope that my clients feel genuinely valued and gain further understanding of themselves and their behaviors through the collaborative exploratory work we do together. Then a new way of living becomes possible.

I treat: Adults, pre-adolescents and adolescents, Trauma, substance abuse, process addictions, family dynamics, sexuality, sexual abuse , LGBTQ specific issues, relationship and attachment issues, self-harm, eating disorders, self-esteem issues, depression, anxiety, anger, ADHD, adoption issues, domestic violence, and bipolar disorder.
Wholeness leads to healing. I guide my clients to accept all parts of themselves and find balance in their lives. I entered the field of counseling with a passion for treating trauma (big T and little t trauma). Along the way I gathered some exceptional tools for doing so, including EMDR and a somatic approach to psychotherapy. Not so far removed from trauma, I have also developed a specialty in treating addiction of all kinds. I have seen the power of emotional healing to transform people's lives in ways they always wanted but didn't know how. I am here to help whenever the client is ready to do that brave and powerful work.

I have great respect for individuals willing to engage in the therapy. It is not an easy process, but it does provide an opportunity for real change and healing. I have spent much of my career working with individuals struggling with issues of addiction, depression and anxiety, and other severe and persistent mental illness and personality disorders. Much time has also been spent working with those recovering from a history of trauma or history of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse .

My specialties include working with survivors of trauma, including childhood sexual abuse , sexual assault , and domestic violence.
Connecting with a therapist should feel safe and reparative, and I work toward this by creating a space to help hold the trauma and pain while we do the work together. Some of my clients have had therapists before, and some are brand new to therapy. My ideal client comes with a desire to release themselves from pain and move toward a better sense of self in the process. Most of my clients are working through previous trauma (childhood and adult), have experienced loss, and many often belong to a marginalized community. Some of my clients benefit from long-term therapy, while others engage in brief therapy to help get back on track.

I hope to support people on their individual path toward connection and restoration- whether that journey be healing from childhood pains, a desire to shift ongoing patterns that have become difficult to manage, moving through experiences of sexual violence, or learning to live with grief and loss. I hope to create a safe therapeutic relationship, where you can be known, seen, and heard; I believe this is the foundation to tap into the healing, wisdom, and courage you already possess.

We are all carrying so much more than ever before in human history: family, work, trauma, a global pandemic. These burdens have a tendency to overflow and spill onto our ability to just get through the day. Let's work through it all together, in a warm, safe atmosphere where you are free to explore until you emerge with or without answers. You're the expert of your own life. My job is to walk alongside of you, carrying some of the burdens long enough for you to take a break, get an outside perspective and discover your autonomy to deal with each one as you see fit.

www.lissafriedman.com - I like to help people find the deep knot of their pattern, gently lovingly untie it, and bring healing to the wound. I have been a therapist for about 30 years, and in private Practice since 1987. While my style is eclectic, it is my warmth, compassion, and acceptance that underlie all of my work. I try to provide an environment, much like a container, for my clients to open to their own natural self compassion and acceptance. Seeing each person as whole, rather than deficient provides an environment for people to come to a natural place of healing.

I believe that every person embodies their own answers and inner wisdom but can often encounter obstacles that make it difficult to access their full capabilities and strengths. I enjoy providing guidance and exploration of the parts of oneself that have been suppressed or avoided as a mechanism of survival. I use a direct and person-centered approach to help to transform patterns that are often instinctual and comfortable, but ultimately unhealthy. I meet clients wherever they are emotionally and incorporate an approach in which I provide a safe space for clients to become empowered at their own pace.

Imagine a recent mental health challenge. Maybe the trauma you’ve carried suddenly brought you to your knees, or your neurodivergence made you fear you’ll always be behind. Now imagine how that challenge may change if you have a relationship with a therapist who you genuinely like and trust - who never loses sight of your strengths even if you do, helps you understand your unique brain with developmental neuroscience, gives you tools and perspective shifts to make your struggle easier, holds a safe space to process all of your traumas, and believes in you so fiercely that you start to believe in yourself. Sound helpful? Let’s talk.

I believe that all of our experiences can enrich us if we can find meaning and reclaim our strength after suffering. I help clients understand how the brain strives ever toward survival, and to use that understanding to transform old thought patterns that have kept them stuck in the past. I work with both children and adults on the premise of resilience, and that our brains can and do evolve all the time. I also offer Supervision services to interns and LCMHCAs, both individually and in small peer groups.

Welcome. :) My clients are intelligent, cognitively, somatically and/or are empathic. They care about growth towards greater health and balance, relationally and professionally. From a body felt and practical sense, they would like to feel met, seen and valued, as is true of all of us. I work from a calm, clear, non-judgmental, warm, fun, skilled and compassionate place, who can connect to what is being shared. I am in my mid 50's. I personally know multiple forms of trauma, and have found greater health and healing through each of their unique and similar forms.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
