Humans are pretty cool. We can watch and rewatch our favorite movies and dye our hair whatever color we choose. But we can also sometimes get stuck in our heads, make decisions in the heat of the moment, or even hurt our friends and
family
emotionally. These things make us us uniquely human, too. I work with a diverse group of adolescents and adults experiencing a myriad of presenting concerns, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship problems, trauma history, suicidal ideation, identity development, and LGBTQIA. I provide school-based therapeutic services within Asheville High/SILSA and to adults in Asheville.

My approach is multifaceted but rooted in relational psychoanalysis and Internal
Family
Systems (IFS).
I work with adolescents and adults navigating a variety of issues, including chronic pain and chronic health conditions, complex trauma, issues of abuse, dissociative conditions, relationship challenges, and
family
of origin concerns. I have a heart for supporting the "outsiders" of the world: people who feel misunderstood and/or who struggle to fit in. Trained in depth psychology, I am an ideal fit for anyone who is engaged in the process of self-understanding, curious about life, and seeking to be known. I believe the potential for deep healing, connection, and revitalization exists within this work.

, the partner, the job, the confidence—while you are giving it all you have to just barely get by? Whatever has brought you this page, I am so glad you have made the courageous decision to start therapy. My work is informed by years of studying Hakomi Psychotherapy, (mindful, body-inclusive self-study), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (trauma work), and Internal
Family
Systems (developing adaptive, harmonious inner relationships).
My orientation as a therapist is well suited for clients looking for deeper, clearer self-connection and awareness as well as the attuned, sensitive therapeutic relationship that supports this. My approach often includes the body's wisdom along with a kind of present moment, open and curious attention - mindfulness. Given enough safety, your awareness can relax and become less habitual, more rich and intuitive, as the session becomes a space for uncovering and revising the implicit learning and beliefs that hold you in place, including troubling patterns of thought related to past trauma, attachment wounding and addiction.

I look at your concerns in the context of your childhood experiences, your current
family
and your life environments. These patterns repeat themselves. People pick up on cues that communicate what you expect out of them and what they expect out of you. These patterns are no accident, you create them! The good news is you can change them! You are like a magnet, and I help you identify what you're attracting and we change your patterns of attraction to healthy ones. It takes practice, but it can be done, and it will affect the rest of your life!

I'll help you find more balance and experience greater joy and harmony in your life. For couples, I will help you feel more deeply respected and honored by one another. Together, we'll reduce the conflict and tension in your relationship and bring back the fun and romance.

Once the cells of the body know the experience of safety, honesty and trust within one relationship it can then emulate the experience in other relationships, this is the healing power that counseling offers. And without the elements of safety, honesty and trust the brain holds on tightly to old ways of being which makes change difficult. I am committed to offering all of my training, skills and experience in the service of creating a healthy, collaborative therapeutic relationship that fosters personal growth and healing.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
