I specialize in helping individuals (adults,
seniors
, male and female veterans and the family members of veterans) who struggle with mental health and substance abuse issues.
My practice is not accepting new clients at this time. I commend you for being here. It takes courage and strength to ask for help. I believe as human beings we are resilient and often intuitively know what we need to do to heal. Unfortunately sometimes that healing can be thwarted by seemingly insurmountable barriers such as depression, anxiety, history of trauma, or substance abuse. Let's work together to create more effective coping skills so you may actually live, rather than just survive, your life. I find that the best results in treatment stem from focusing on people's strengths rather than their weaknesses.

Together we will work to identify places where you have become stuck, or perhaps where you have become your own worst enemy, and over time I will help you develop a fresh perspective of your identity and new skills for tackling the problems of life. I have a passion for helping individuals and couples sort through relational and emotional conflicts, because relationships are so frequently messy.

Many of us encounter challenges as we search for deeper self-understanding and endeavor to make meaningful sense of our lives. We may find ourselves struggling with feelings that are frightening or navigating painful patterns that we don't yet understand. I support people in putting words to and becoming compassionately acquainted with these complex inner experiences. The more of ourselves we put into words within a safe and nurturing relationship the more receptive we can become, both to our own depths and to the rich complexity of life.

Once the cells of the body know the experience of safety, honesty and trust within one relationship it can then emulate the experience in other relationships, this is the healing power that counseling offers. And without the elements of safety, honesty and trust the brain holds on tightly to old ways of being which makes change difficult. I am committed to offering all of my training, skills and experience in the service of creating a healthy, collaborative therapeutic relationship that fosters personal growth and healing.

I view therapy as an ongoing conversation in which the client receives support and feedback that family and friends may not be able to give. I enjoy working with people who are willing to do the work to make peace with questions and challenges that don't always have easy answers. I support individuals who desire assistance with managing a variety of concerns such as anxiety, emotional eating, substance use or depression. Additionally I am EMDR trained. I also offer couples counseling from an attachment perspective for both “traditional” and LGBT+ relationships.

Most of us, at some point, feel disappointed with life. Maybe we expected it to be more. More joy. More peace. More connection with others. More meaning. We’re not looking for perfection, but is this all there is? You may label this feeling grief, anxiety, loneliness, depression, addiction, or you may be unable to give it a name. It may surface in you individually, or in your relationships. That nagging sense of discontent serves as a wake up call and it deserves attention. This is the purpose of my practice.

I believe therapy is a collaboration between the therapist and the client. You are the expert on you. I bring my training in psychology, and years of experience in dealing with human issues and concerns. We work together to find practical solutions to the issues you are experiencing. I work very hard to understand your concerns, thoughts and feelings. If I understand correctly what the issues are then I have the clinical experience to draw upon to be able to offer potential solutions that you will be comfortable with.

—Accepting new clients March 2022— I view clients as whole people in the context of their lives. You are more than a diagnosis. It's important to me to collaborate in setting goals, selecting an approach to therapy, and checking in along the way. I've worked with people from a broad range of backgrounds on anxiety, relationships, stress, depression, life transitions, and LGBTQ+ issues. I also specialize in relationship counseling for smart, committed couples who want to improve communication, feel more loved, work as a team instead of against each other, or just get unstuck from an old issue or pattern.

We do the best we can to work through life's challenges, but sometimes get stuck, through fear, depression or old patterns of adaptive behavior that no longer serve us. I strongly believe it's possible to realize your natural tendency toward balance and wholeness. Together we'll address roadblocks to your healing, accessing parts of you which may be sleeping, hiding, working less efficiently or effectively than they might. Our work combines practical strategies for immediate situations, and bringing acceptance and compassion to parts that carry old wounds, allowing relief and space for joy and greater life satisfaction to emerge.

It is common to see therapy as a journey to discover the Self. We have familiar maps, or patterns, which can lead to unhappiness or self-sabotaging behavior. You may find yourself stranded in all-too-familiar territory with little idea of how to move on. Like many journeys, it can be an exciting adventure but can also be full of unknowns. I see my role as your guide, to blaze new “routes” together that have worked well for others. As Helen Keller once said: “What I am looking for is not out there, it is in me.” I truly believe the exquisite joy you find by falling in love with yourself is a journey you don’t want to miss!

How can I find a therapist in Asheville?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
