Life is simply too much to navigate alone. We all need the support of trusted others to witness and process the changing tides of our lives with us. My clients often feel stuck, conflicted, alone, and overwhelmed by life's many demands. You may find yourself needing a lot of reassurance, struggling with confidence, or feeling dissatisfied with relationships. My hope is to help you reconnect with yourself, cultivate inner safety and trust, and rediscover your desires for life with clarity, compassion, and confidence.

As a maternal-infant mental health psychologist, I'm a pioneer of healing and advocacy for instances of birth and death trauma. It's not within my power to erase your grief, but I can accompany you, offering you the support needed to navigate your way toward healing. There's no 'right' path for personal growth; it's all about what suits you best. My role is to assist you in finding your equilibrium and determining your journey's pace to achieve balance.

We are all faced with the task of aligning with our authentic selves, a journey that is especially challenging for women—we are pressured to fulfill many roles, our decisions are subjected to higher scrutiny, and our right to autonomy is not always in our own hands (i.e., abortion, reproductive rights). In trying to navigate all these moving pieces, we are often overcome by stress, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, frustrated, defeated, and inadequate. With all the noise, it becomes difficult to connect with our internal compass and we find ourselves lost.

Hello, Thank you for visiting my page. I have worked with people who have experienced trauma, depression, unresolved grief, addiction, anxiety, loss, and life transitions. I work collaboratively with my clients, while being supportive and dedicated to their increased well being. My approach to therapy is to be genuine, open, honest, supportive, and curious. Ultimately, I consider the goal of psychotherapy as empowering others to reach aspired levels of purpose.

Hello and Welcome! I have been a committed practitioner and learner in mental health for the past 20 years. My belief is that every individual has his or her own distinct path to psychological well being. My goal as a therapist is to assist my clients with finding their own path by helping them get in touch with their own inner wisdom. I believe that people are doing the best that they can, however at times their true self can be blocked or hidden from awareness. Therapy can help to uncover this truth.

Do you find yourself going through an uncomfortable period of change? Or maybe you’re facing a need for change and feeling overwhelmed by it. Either way, you may be dealing with stress, grief, isolation, or addiction. Additional factors like discrimination burden, caregiving roles, and financial difficulty may make change seem impossible. It can feel safer to live with dissatisfaction than to risk losing the comfort of routine, but avoidance can allow unhappiness to snowball. This can happen at any age. Humans grow and change throughout our lives, which requires maintenance, flexibility, and willingness to tune in to our needs.

The mass of men (and women) lead lives of quiet desperation (Henry David Thoreau). But do we have to? As children we are often not allowed to make important decisions about our life and some suffer attachment issues and other forms of trauma that are outside of our control. Therapy is an active choice we can make as adults. It provides a sacred place where you can feel safe to ask yourself the most important questions: who am I? what do I want? who and what do I love? how do I want to spend my precious life? Change is not easy. Growth and learning is a life long process. It is never too late to become your authentic self.

There are times we all feel disconnected, angry, sad, alone in our relationships, stuck in difficult patterns. It can be very painful, and we can feel helpless to change. But we don't have to be alone, and there is help. Counseling is a powerful, proven way for individuals, couples and families to feel supported as they discover the causes and conditions that underlie these difficult, disruptive feelings, and to learn how to break unhelpful cycles, to face the conflicts and fears that confront us all, and, ultimately, to feel more of a sense of security, confidence and well-being.

We’re wired toward a sense of belonging and connection to ourselves and others, but we all have strategies to protect us and adapt to life's challenges. Sometimes these inadvertently impact our mental/emotional health and get in the way of the flow of life, leaving us feeling confused, stuck, or disconnected. Other times, those strategies feel suddenly inadequate in the face of circumstances outside of our control. Giving space to layered, complex thoughts, emotions, and experiences and experimenting with new ways of being with a compassionate, well-trained therapist can support you in navigating a life that feels more like yours.

For the past 15 years I've worked exclusively assisting couples in understanding and correcting missteps in their marriage or primary relationship - and helping them to discover how to establish rich, fulfilling, and solid connections and communication. If your marriage isn't feeling as stable as you'd like, you're likely experiencing some heartache, worry, or some resentment. Having intense emotions in this situation is certainly normal, but they also make effective communication even more difficult... right when it's most needed. Using the expertise of a couples counselor in these times can be a very worthwhile investment.

I know personally how hard it can be to experience sexual/physical/emotional trauma/addiction/depression/grief/financial/relational ruin/overwhelming anxiety. Hoping to get through a day with the jaw clenching/palm sweating/handshakes/thoughts racing/heart pounding/doubting every idea/thought/emotion, asking will this be forever? Sometimes, you experience paralyzing nightmares or dreams that you are moving in slow motion and feel so alone and isolated when in a crowded room. Moreover, the constant dread (or the invisible weighted depression blanket). I get it; I've lived it and worked with many others who have.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Asheville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
