I’m the right fit for you if you are looking for someone to be authentic and honest with you. Life has a way of giving us more than we feel we can handle sometimes, individually, in our relationships or as a family. It takes bravery to step outside of the patterns that we are stuck in and do something different. Experiences, trauma, anxiety, depression, you name it, can throw barriers our way to feel like it's impossible to thrive. It IS possible to live a secure, confident and productive life, even if you do not feel that way right now.

I look at your concerns in the context of your childhood experiences, your current family and your life environments. These patterns repeat themselves. People pick up on cues that communicate what you expect out of them and what they expect out of you. These patterns are no accident, you create them! The good news is you can change them! You are like a magnet, and I help you identify what you're attracting and we change your patterns of attraction to healthy ones. It takes practice, but it can be done, and it will affect the rest of your life!

I encourage you to set attainable goals that will lead to enhanced self-esteem, value, and meaning in your life thereby permitting you to gain greater levels of satisfaction, happiness, and a sense of completeness.
My experience has taught me the importance of active listening. At times it is difficult to self-identify the triggers that set off your emotional reactions. Quite often, these feelings seem overwhelming such as when you experience prolonged grief. There are innovative treatments now available to assist you in changing matters like this rapidly and safely.

You’re experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, burnout (or all of the above). The feeling of being "too much" here but "not enough" there causes an internal spiral of inadequacy, confusion, guilt, and shame, leading to self-doubt and decisions that don't serve you. You're tired of feeling like you have to constantly prove yourself and give twice as much. On top of that, the world is wild! You’ve listened to self-help podcasts, followed inspirational people on social media, and downloaded mindfulness apps, hoping to find solutions, encouragement, and ways to cope. Gah! It's exhausting, and you think, "This can't be it, right?"

Do you feel like you don’t know who are? Do you feel misunderstood? Have you struggled with confidence, fear, and hopelessness? Having these thoughts and emotions can be incredibly painful. Many feel ashamed for having them and try to manage their mental health on their own. This tends to perpetuate greater feelings of isolation and relational pain.

Are characters/themes in the latest Pixar film or Netflix show relatable? Do you find yourself connecting feelings to movies, music, tv? Maybe you're experiencing a recent life change like a new job, relationship status change, or a big move, and it sucks doing it alone. Can you relate to the “buzz” of anxiety Ted Lasso felt when his panic crept in. Are you the Nick Miller of the group, struggling with holding boundaries, overthink little things, or feel you are your own worst enemy? Maybe you struggle with healthy communication and conflict resolution like the families in House of Dragons. You're motivated, but what now?

I was a teenager and young adult that experienced unhappiness and anger. I even thought therapy was a bunch of fuckery and wouldn’t help… so I avoided therapy until it was really needed. I wished I got therapy sooner as I found resilience and empowerment to be the best version of myself and that is what I hope to do for you. I primarily work with pre-adolescents, adolescents, and young adults who struggle with various types of trauma, anger, anxiety, depression with or without self injurious behaviors and suicidal ideation, all types of addiction. (Also, I am licensed in NC, SC, VA and CT).

Your life has not turned out how you had hoped or planned. You are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, anger, substance use, or loss. You find yourself trying to solve this discomfort by repeating behaviors that provide temporary relief, but ultimately lead you further away from the kind of life you want, and the kind of person you want to be. Instead of stuck, exhausted, desperate, and dissatisfied, you'd like to move through your life with confidence, compassion, clarity, trust, creativity, curiosity, and centeredness. You'd like to finally resolve the hurt or pain you have been carrying inside you.

Mindfulness informs my approach to psychotherapy, drawing from forty years of clinical experience, personal mediation practice, and the wisdom contained in my many publications. Life, like sport, like art as well, is best viewed as a process happening in the present moment. Such an approach can help coping with anxiety, depression, pain and all the slings and arrows of life.

Many of the children, teens, and young adults I work with are coping with emotional or behavioral challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, school stress, or family conflict. They—and often their parents—come to therapy seeking guidance, emotional balance, and practical tools to strengthen relationships and promote growth. My goal is to help them feel seen, heard, and supported as they move toward greater confidence and self-understanding.

I love working with individuals and couples who are ready for change and healing, even if they do not know where to start. Sometimes we think we know where we want to go in life, but feel stuck in how to get there. Other times we are not sure what it looks or feels like, but only know that something needs to get better now. I primarily work with people living with the effects of trauma (complex childhood trauma, religious trauma, or relationship trauma), stress, anxiety, depression and wanting to overcome shame. I strive to make this a safe place for all people I also specialize in working with the unique issues men face today.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
