But for kids with anxiety and OCD, worries don’t STAY small.
The good news: therapy can help OCD and severe anxiety. I’m Katie Lear, founder of Davidson Child Anxiety Counseling, a small group practice for kids and teens ages 8–16. Using the techniques I wish had been available when I struggled with OCD as a child, we help kids break free from the worry cycle and learn lifelong skills.

I work with adults 18+ and I have completed extensive training in approaches geared to treating OCD and anxiety.
Do you experience unwanted intrusive thoughts, images, or impulses? Have you ever worried you’re “losing it,” or “going crazy” because you have these thoughts? Do you find yourself replaying conversations over and over again to make sure you didn’t offend someone or embarrass yourself? Do you find yourself avoiding people or places to try to prevent unwanted thoughts from happening in the first place? Does the overwhelming urge to think things over and over again or repeat an action take up time and space that you'd rather spend on more important things?

Treatment with me will provide a balance of a non-judgmental, client-centered approach while also challenging individuals to reach their highest potential. I take a biopsychosocial approach to treatment and understand the importance of treating the whole individual rather than just a small part.

I believe therapy is about helping people realize the greatest amount of happiness in their lives. This may be learning how to manage one's depression and anxiety, a child or adolescent managing their opposition and defiance, or even some skills to make a speech or fall asleep. I also feel therapy is key in processing daily conflicts that affect our thoughts and feelings, but also learning how to make the best decisions that we value.

I’m originally from Ohio where I attended college and began my counseling practice. I worked in Dallas, TX and Wilmington, NC before settling in Apex, NC. Clients who I see are typically having a hard time with at least one important life issue. They are feeling overwhelmed which is impacting most other parts of their lives. They want to think, feel and do better and that’s what I help them do.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
