Every person I serve has a unique story. While some clients experience challenges in just one area, most experience difficulty multiple areas (mental health, trauma, loss, addiction), creating a complex, vicious cycle if not all parts are addressed. The circumstances that bring someone to therapy do not come in 'neat little packages.' I enjoy sorting out the pieces with each client, getting to the root of the issue, and offering a combination of evidence-based therapeutic interventions that help clients finally begin to experience relief, and start living a happier, more fulfilled life.

I often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Schema therapy in my practice.
Experiencing problems with anger, depression anxiety, emotional dis- regulation, trauma, hyperactivity or problems with social anxiety or low self-esteem? the Institute might be a good fit. I assess clients for readiness for bariatric surgery. I draw upon different models to explain mental health difficulties and find the biopsychosocial model particularly useful in understanding what might be contributory factors to presenting issues. I use cognitive, emotive therapy and other evidence based practices to bring about change. I also utilize holistic interventions to reduce depression, anxiety and excessive anger symptoms.

I have completed specialized training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Schema therapy, EMDR, and Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD.
Depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, moral injury, and other symptoms can take away the ability to enjoy life, and make it difficult to remain socially connected and maintain good interpersonal relationships. Life circumstances, mental or physical illness, coping with transitions, and unexpected events increase stress, and contribute to feeling overwhelmed and helpless. I will work to help you find a way through these painful experiences, reduce unwanted symptoms, and improve quality of life. If you are struggling with painful symptoms or situation, call me today and we can begin working on the life you want to be living.

I use a schema therapy approach with some clients and hypnosis for certain types of problems, if that seems appropriate and the client is interested in doing so.
I am closing my practice in Rocky Mt on Oct 1. I will be joining a practice in Durham in November. But when people are unhappy or anxious or distressed, they sometimes consider consulting a psychologist. I am not so concerned about finding a label for you as I am about helping you to find a way to enjoy your life and your relationships and be productive in a way that you find satisfying. I seek an approach that fits your problem and situation, and that may be insight-oriented, cognitive behavioral, using hypnosis or simply supportive, as we explore together, at a pace you are comfortable with, your goals and concerns.

Clients tend to focus on the problem and want to "fix" the problem and reach their end goal. What I try to challenge my clients here is that instead of focusing on the problem, let us try focusing on solutions. Instead of focusing on an end goal, let us try walking through this life changing journey together. As a therapist, a positive therapeutic relationship and patience is key to fully understand and slowly opening up the shell of vulnerability. Once the client has allowed the therapist into their vulnerability, positive change can start to occur.

My ideal client would be someone that would like to work on achieving their goals to discover more about themselves. They may of struggled with other mental health professionals and felt like their needs weren't met. They would want to learn more about themselves as a person and discover a more clear diagnosis. If you are questioning ADHD or Autism diagnosis I can help guide you. I have worked with people in helping professions like, first responders who may want to learn how to cope with the job or cope with retiring from the profession. I have a background in EMS so I have been able to relate to these professions.

You’re here because something isn’t working, and I want to help you find clarity and peace. Reaching out for support can be a big step, and I want you to know you’re in the right place. I specialize in helping people who are navigating the aftermath of trauma. This might include complex or attachment trauma, betrayal trauma, interpersonal trauma, migration trauma, PTSD, or the quiet ache of feeling disconnected from yourself or others. A big part of my work focuses on trauma-informed (AEDP, IFS, parts work, ACT, DBT, relational, mindfulness) support for people struggling with disordered eating patterns.

Schema Therapy

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy is based on the idea that maladaptive thought patterns formed in childhood—that other people can never be relied on, for example—can interfere with healthy functioning in adulthood. Accordingly, schema therapy works by directly targeting such unhealthy schemas, identifying their consequences, and replacing them with more adaptive ways of thinking. To this end, schema therapists aim to “reparent” the client by offering what they didn’t get in childhood—validation, for instance, or compassion—to reorient their worldview.

Is schema therapy evidence-based?

Schema therapy is still considered relatively new, and research on its efficacy is still in progress. However, some studies have concluded that it can be effective at treating certain mental health conditions, most notably personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder. Evidence for its efficacy in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD is promising but less conclusive, and experts warn that much of the existing research is of low quality.

Is schema therapy a type of CBT?

Schema therapy is based on many principles of CBT, most notably the process of recognizing and challenging maladaptive thought patterns. But because schema therapy also draws from other approaches, including psychoanalysis and Gestalt therapy, it is not considered a form of CBT. It also typically delves deeper into the client’s childhood than does CBT.

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy does not call for a set number of sessions and is instead open-ended, with the treatment timeline depending on the client’s primary concern(s), progress, and preferences. Treatment that lasts between six months and two years is common, though many clients will start to see progress much earlier than that.
