Parenting has been challenging for a while now. Your child has become defiant, disrespectful, and seems to have anger outbursts most days of the week. You’ve read countless self-help tips on managing your child’s behavior- time outs, rewards, punishments, spankings. These things worked for a couple of weeks, but there have been no long-term results from any of them. You always end up back at square one. Although, you don’t want to admit it, you’ve begun to dislike your child. You feel desperate for a change in your child’s behavior. You also feel hopeless that a change is possible. Is this what parenting is supposed to be like?

You’re a guy. You’ve known you needed help but you’ve been handling it. But something has changed and it's too much. Your wife/girlfriend and family are upset with you. You get things done at work but you’re overwhelmed with life. You worry all the time and are overcome with sadness. The fear of losing everything and being alone is too much for you. Your anger about situations comes out without your permission. Your wife says you are a good husband but the voice in your head says otherwise. It’s time to do something about it.

You want to make changes in your world, but you feel overwhelmed. Feelings of stress and anxiety leave you unsure of where to even start. You would like to talk to someone, but you are afraid of being misunderstood and judged. The loneliness from not being able to open up about what is happening just creates more helplessness, confusion, and pain.

I have worked as a mental health counselor for the past twenty five years in a variety of settings. My experience includes counseling persons who have experienced anxiety, depression and trauma. Over my career, I have been fortunate to have acquired many skills and experiences which I refer to as my "tool box". I believe that no single theory or approach has the "answers" to effectively treat and help you with the problems that you hope to address in counseling. My belief is that you have the answers to your problems, and we can work together to find healthy solutions. I also provide supervision services for LPCA's.

Are you feeling stressed, strained, drained, or anxious? Are you finding yourself overworked, sleepless, with no one to talk to or process with? Sure, you have friends, but it’s hard to imagine dumping everything you are feeling on them, so you hold it in. You might not even know what you are feeling, so how can you explain it to them? You are trying so hard, but nothing is working, and you are losing motivation. On top of everything else, you feel like you are losing interest in the things that used to matter to you.

Everyone’s path to healing is unique, and I’m here to support you on your healing journey. Reaching out to begin therapy can be a difficult first step, but you are deserving of healing! I believe therapy should be a place where you can show up unapologetically. Culturally sensitive care is at the forefront of my work, and I enjoy connecting with communities of color and those who hold marginalized identities. I work with many individuals who are seeking therapy for the first time. Welcome!

Struggling with anxiety, depression, racing thoughts, disrputed sleep, grief, career choices, and relationship strain make life tiring. It doesn't have to be this way. There are many tools you can learn to ease the struggle and find greater joy in your everyday living. Men often hesitate to seek help given how we are socialized to 'be strong' and 'not show emotion.' In fact, men who DO seek objective help tend to benefit greatly from an experience unlike most in male friendship circles.

How can I find a therapist in Alamance County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
