My primary goal as your therapist is to help you navigate challenges through a non-judgmental, collaborative and client-centered relationship. As an Afro-Latina female clinician, one of my passions is to serve people in my community and to help them find meaning in their lives. I employ an integrative approach to therapy to meet individual needs. This means that I integrate various techniques from several modalities to meet you where you are and help you achieve deep healing. The approaches that I use most often are Psychodynamic, Narrative therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral therapy.

I combine narrative and relational therapies with evidence based practices to help clients clarify feelings, achieve goals and begin thriving.
I am a warm and empathic therapist who strives to make clients feel safe and understood while exploring what brings them into the office. A primary focus of my work is to help clients overcome the psychological barriers that lead to dissatisfaction, depression and lack of motivation and hope. I am dedicated to creating an authentic atmosphere that invites curiosity and self compassion into the room. Together we will figure out what your goals are for therapy, what does and does not work, and how to make sure you are moving toward a life that you want.

The tools that I use to accomplish this include: a narrative focus or the art of self-storytelling, being goal oriented yet flexible, committed and consistent.
I have dedicated my life to understanding our collective human experience; and each individual's unique perspective. I recognize that the individual brings to therapy a host of experiences and the dynamic influence between culture and environment. Oftentimes, restlessness and crisis are generally the precipitants for people seeking help. Relationships: marriage, break-ups/divorce; grief & loss; mental/medical health issues; and career/life transitions may be some of the experiences influencing your decision to begin therapy. It takes courage to acknowledge that there is a problem and even greater courage to seek intervention.

I work with narrative therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and other modes of talk therapy.
I want to congratulate you on exploring those aspects of your life that you want to understand or change. I know how hard it is for folks to reach out for help. As you will see, I have a wide range of experience working with folks who are reaching out for help. I work with clients to establish a safe space where we can work collaboratively on the concerns you seek to address. In addition to my private practice, I am a social work professor. I pride myself on keeping current with intervention techniques that help clients reach their goals. I believe in working with someone on their strengths and looking at the impact.

I utilize healing-centered, liberation-focused narrative therapy.
Clients often arrive at my door carrying it all on their backs wishing to make sense of their experiences, and their stories. They are uncertain of how they've gotten to be where they are. They wish to know themselves wholly. They wish to live deliberately and to know where they belong. They hope to trust themselves. They crave an authentic connection to self. They seek permission to rest. They long for freedom and to feel empowered when they look in the mirror. They have been through the thick of it, have had to become resilient and feel called to finally come home to themselves with love and gentleness.

My therapy style uses mindfulness, action-oriented, and narrative therapy strategies to assist you in becoming more aware of your values, goals, and feelings in the moment and taking concrete steps toward lasting change.
Do you sometimes feel like life is a story you're reading rather than living? Do concerns like stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, grief/loss, and uncertainty about identity prevent you from being your authentic self? Do you find yourself struggling to express your thoughts to those around you and wish to understand the emotional part of yourself better? If any of these questions resonate with you, then my style of counseling might be an excellent opportunity to work towards a life that is more personally meaningful; in a safe, confidential, and supportive environment.

Integrative in my work, I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and narrative therapy, with specific training in DBT (a form of CBT) with parents, couples, and families.
I believe all people are equipped with the tools to live a meaningful life. Only somehow, along our journeys, many of us learn we cannot trust ourselves - and, instead, look externally for direction. I am committed to helping you recognize and reconnect with your innate abilities. I provide a safe, non-judgemental space for you to reconnect with yourself and identify your goals. Using a collaborative, direct, and often comedic approach, it is my mission to help you feel empowered to do more than live - to thrive.

Mindfully integrating narrative and existential approaches to therapy we will work towards identifying realistic solutions to your stressors.
As your therapist I will see you as the whole and dynamic person you are. I will help you discover which pieces of your story are authentically your own and which pieces no longer (or never) served you. This journey is one that I am excited to embark upon with you while respecting the fact that you are indeed the expert on your narrative. I will be here for you to discover where the authenticity within your narrative may have been lost, perhaps even without your knowledge. Your needs and goals will be of primary importance as we work together to find solutions for those aspects of your narrative that are causing you distress.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
