Over the last two decades my clientele has changed along with my experience, skill acquisition and personal life. First as a clinician, then business owner, family man and student of life and living, I have been fortunate to have a career that reflects my own life. Peek moments, so many blessings, long trials and struggles and big losses have rounded the edges of once sharp ideals and brought a humble gratitude for the souls I've met in my office. While I have a solid grasp of several powerful treatment modalities, my goal first is to be a good human to those who seek me out.

I welcome the opportunity to work with young adults to older adults to help to develop a preferred self. I know that developing an identity as a young adult can be challenging. Professionals may find it exhausting to have a work-life balance, or may be seeking meaning in their lives. I appreciate and value the intersections of our identities and how we navigate our lives. I work in a relational way holding clients in positive regard, attuning to you, and helping to identify internal and external resources to apply.

Life can be difficult at times. Something I have learned over the years, through my own experiences, career paths, academics, and family/relationship struggles. We are all susceptible to the trials and tribulations of life. Whether caused by your actions, the actions of others, or some external forces. You may be experiencing a difficult period in your life. Wanting and needing support during this troubled time. I offer that support through an unbiased, open-minded, and non-judgemental partnership with you. I do mean partnership. We will be working together throughout the therapeutic process.

Searching for a therapist can feel daunting, but finding the right one is worth the effort. My practice is informed by evidence-based psychodynamic principles and I approach my work with curiosity and care. Research indicates that the best predictor of effective therapy is not the particular method, but rather the "fit" between the therapist and patient. I always suggest that folks talk to a few therapists before making a decision about how to proceed. I love the work I do and would be happy to chat with you about how I might be able to help.

Do you seek to better understand yourself, ease suffering, grow to your full potential, both individually and in relationships, and be more present in your life? Then you're in the right place. Many of the things with which we struggle, such as anxiety and depression, are ultimately tied to difficulties in how we relate to ourselves, and perhaps even more so, to others. Because of this, I see our relationship in therapy as the most important factor in helping you achieve your goals. When we feel supported, understood, and compassionately challenged, growth occurs over time at the level of the brain, promoting long-term change.

Starting therapy can often bring up many feelings; and taking those first steps to find a good fit between you and your therapist is an important part of the process. We will work together to create a relationship that feels safe enough to address your concerns. In addition to my private psychotherapy practice I have provided trauma informed therapy to individuals and families in various community based, non-profit agencies, in addition to Clinical Supervision.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
