My practice is centered around the idea that everyone has a story to tell, and that by sharing and thinking about the constitutive elements of these stories they can reach the understanding of themselves they've been looking for. The goal of therapy is to make the unconscious conscious, as Freud said, and by looking at the narrative of your life we can create a framework for understanding how the issues you face have come about, and how you can address them in order to lead a fuller, more mindful and meaningful life.

I draw on various strategies (EMDR, relational, CBT, psychoanalytic, narrative) and tailor my approach to the needs and goals of my clients--what is effective and helpful.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and EMDR-trained therapist accepting individuals and families for therapy. I strive to create a space where people feel comfortable expressing themselves honestly and it’s possible to better understand, navigate, and heal from challenging experiences over time. It's important to me to acknowledge the impact of socioeconomic and historical conditions on people’s lives. I am particularly committed to supporting people of color and others from marginalized communities to overcome trauma and hardships, and to experience more joy, love, and fulfillment in their lives.

In my therapeutic practice, I believe that healing is cultivated within the safety of a supportive and non-judgmental relationship. I find that this allows for individuals I work with to feel grounded in their truth as well as feel empowered to use the tools they gain through our work together. My practice offers relational, narrative, and psychodynamic approaches from a trauma-responsive lens. Through the development of a trusting therapeutic relationship, we will compassionately get to the center of challenging patterns and support you in your process to feel like your most authentic self.

Julie’s approach to therapy is tailored to the unique needs of every client, and based in Narrative, Family Systems, and Solution Focused modalities.
Julie views the therapeutic relationship as a supportive alliance that is formed through the sharing and exploration of one’s unique and sacred personal story. Julie believes that through sharing your story and engaging in a process of exploration, the lingering effects of past traumas can be released, as well as patterns that no longer serve you.

My practice incorporates narrative, relational, psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral practices from a trauma-responsive approach.
I believe that healing is possible within the warmth of a supportive, honest and non-judgmental relationship. Whether you're struggling with sadness, isolation, worry or pain, the safety of the therapeutic relationship can make carrying these normal human emotions less heavy. While beginning with a new therapist can feel daunting, together we will build a meaningful connection where your own voice and unique strengths will lead the healing journey. Through my work with individuals, couples, and families, I create a space for you to build confidence and self-esteem, reduce stress, and improve communication.

My main theoretical orientations of choice are person-centered therapy, narrative therapy, and CBT but I am open to exploring other techniques per client.
Are you feeling overwhelmed with the commitments you have in your life? Trying to balance it all while ensuring you consider yourself too? Having difficulty maneuvering these uncertain waters called life? I would like to help by discussing your goals, where you stand, and most importantly, where you would like to be. It is okay to be struggling, but I would like to help you with this heavy load by giving you a safe and supportive space to discuss it all and examine your life in unique ways that you have never considered before.

My approach is anchored in psychodynamic theory and practice; however, I recognize the value of a flexible orientation in which other techniques - whether CBT, narrative, or solutions-based - are recruited as needed.
I believe that individuals hold a great deal of expertise about their own lives. Psychotherapy is not a process of prescription, but rather one of co-exploration. In my view, a therapeutic alliance grounded in empathy, curiosity, and shared purpose can be the site of profound healing and insight generation.

I work from an integrative, (humanistic, strengths based) approach drawing on elements from a variety of therapeutic practices—family systems, MI, ACT, TF-CBT, narrative, and collaborative—tailored to meet your unique needs.
Our work together will give you the space to safely discuss your experiences, explore possibilities and feel heard and appreciated. I'm a thoughtful and nonjudgmental listener that views therapy as a dynamic partnership—founded on mutual openness, care, and respect. I see individuals as the best experts of their lived experience and when given active and holistic support can discover their inner strengths and preferred life directions. I strive to be person-centered, trauma-informed, and relational, while paying attention to the impact power dynamics, social expectations and structures have on people and the counseling process.

Do you ever let your anxiety get in the way of achieving the joy or productivity you want? Do you feel stuck? We cannot change what we are not aware of, therefore exploring the roots of our suffering allows us to have the opportunity to create positive change in order to have a better future. I aim to help my patients find awareness of their own suffering and individual ways to lean into it in order to ultimately work on letting go of what is no longer serving them. I cater individually to each and every patient often honing in on strengths-based and solution-oriented perspectives.

Come as you are. Psychotherapy is a safe and private place to explore the issues preventing you from living a more productive, meaningful, happier life. I'm aware that it takes an incredible amount of courage to walk into a therapy room and share things that require great vulnerability. My approach is person-centered, empathic and flexible, meeting clients where they are in their lives and helping them to identify and work on areas they would like to change or explore. I utilize supportive, mindfulness based and existential therapies with some use of CBT and thoughtfully inserted levity.

At present, I am accepting adult clients only, and provide individual, family, couples and group psychotherapy. As the child of immigrants, I appreciate the challenges of negotiating between different cultures. Some members of immigrant communities are afraid of seeking help for mental illness. They fear being labeled negatively, shunned and stigmatized. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of misinformation about mental illness (e.g. you must be sick, crazy, weak if you seek therapy). Sadly, not enough people seek the help they need and deserve.

Brynley believes the most important role of a therapist is as facilitator. In every interaction she is most concerned with creating a safe space that will allow insight to naturally arise as you walk your own individually tailored journey to healing and wellness. She believes the relationship between therapist and client is the most important ingredient in a successful treatment. Above all else, Brynley prioritizes connection, curiosity, communication, and empathy.

Whether you're worrying often, struggling with relationship stress and conflict, needing to process traumatic events, or wanting to experience a more loving sense of self, beginning therapy can be anxiety-provoking and takes courage. I hope to make your experience a little easier by listening with compassion and curiosity, moving at your pace, and centering the therapy around your needs. Do others describe you as overachieving, self-reliant, perfectionistic, or Type-A? Do you struggle with creating enough balance in your life? Do you forget about your needs & desires, and then find yourself feeling burnt out or resentful of others?

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
