Will I ever be good enough?....Maybe I AM the crazy one?... Have you had these thoughts? Are you anxious, depressed, a chronic people pleaser? Have your "loved ones" blamed you for "everything that is wrong"? Do you hate the way they act around you, but then a few memories of when they were nice make you feel guilty for having those thoughts (cognitive dissonance)? This is all normal if you have experienced narcissistic abuse or emotionally immature parents. This is where I come in. Healing is a real possibility. You deserve it and I'm dedicated to helping you move from surviving to thriving!

You look in the mirror and see the "bad" traits. That you're not thin enough, not righteous enough, not "good" enough. You realize that these traits were projected there by someone else--a partner, or maybe even a parent. You want to recover from perhaps a lifetime of emotional pain and narcissistic abuse but you don't know where to begin...I specialize in treating adult children of narcissists, cult abuse/religious trauma survivors, and those struggling with disordered eating and body image issues. I can support you in developing your inner strengths so that when you look in the mirror it will be your true self staring back at you.

Issues of shame, fear of abandonment, betrayal, intimacy, attachment, roller-coaster relationships, uncontrollable anger, explosive rage, impulsivity, that can result in narcissistic or borderline behaviors and the need to medicate these painful, out of control emotions.
I believe in the power of research-driven, neuroscience-based treatment because healing begins with knowing. I am a neuroscience-trained cognitive-behaviorist with a PhD in clinical psychology, and 40 years of clinical expertise in the assessment and psychotherapy for problems with PTSD, Childhood Trauma, and Addiction, for individuals and couples including veterans and active-duty military. If you suffer from trauma or addiction (drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, pornography, internet/gaming), you are welcome to be seen in my office, anywhere in the country, or around the world through telehealth web-therapy.

Your most well-intentioned friend or internet guru might have you believe that fixing your problems is a quick process that involves simple mantras and just doing things differently. In contrast, I believe that it is possible in time and in the context of developing a genuine and safe therapeutic relationship, for you to feel understood, cared for and free to express yourself while creating change. My clinical experience lies in helping those through relationship troubles, uncomfortable and painful feelings, addiction to substances, feelings of depression and anxiety, or just a quiet sense that something is not right.

My approach to therapy is one that prioritizes the creation of a relationship that is safe, mutual, and honest. I want my clients to feel empowered and free to explore themselves and grow into the person they wish to become. I am calm, warm, and active. I offer my clients feedback and challenge them in ways that encourage growth, often with some levity and humor. I value knowing my clients as a person and prioritize understanding and appreciating their perspective. I work together with my clients to identify negative patterns in their life and provide the opportunity to create new, healthy experiences.

Welcome! In my view, therapy is like a journey, and whether you begin that journey with a specific destination in mind or are just trying to get a move on, I can help shed new light and give you tools to navigate old territory and new horizons. My approach is pragmatic - unassuming but not naive, and compassionate but also candid.

I firmly believe that you deserve to live your life to its fullest, and I am eager to help you make strides towards what you want most. A lot of my patients feel overwhelmed by unexpected life events and fear about what happens next; feel ill-equipped to cope with pressing anxiety; or long to have more depth and connection in their relationships. It is possible to feel better. Therapy allows you to explore with curiosity previously avoided parts of your thoughts, feelings and past in a nonjudgmental way. A trusting relationship with your therapist can help you understand more about yourself and what you can do to feel better.

I have been in practice for eighteen years. I work deeply and compassionately with patients focusing on the underlying issues of many common psychological problems. Therapist and patient work together to discover both positive and negative feelings about oneself, and what gets in the way of feeling good and making positive and healthy choices. This includes within oneself as well as in relationships. I work extensively with patients with health issues, especially cancer patients. I know how deep the changes that come from working this way can be, and have faith in the enormous benefit to patients.

Each of us comes to psychotherapy for different reasons, and while no two psychotherapy journeys will be alike, we all require the same essential conditions of empathy, acceptance, and supportive encouragement to examine our lives with an attitude of curiosity and a creative vision for change. As a licensed psychologist with a wide-range of training and clinical experience, I am committed to establishing a therapeutic relationship that is dedicated toward understanding the circumstances that have brought you to this point in your life and in drawing upon your strengths and resources for taking your life in a new direction.

If you feel stuck, ruminative, or disconnected from your own life, and are seeking an engaged and examined life, psychotherapy can help. I deeply enjoy empowering my patients to know themselves and those around them with greater nuance, depth and honesty. Rather than labeling symptoms in a medicalized, detached way, I work to help patients negotiate complex relationships with themselves and those around them. By identifying patterns and the ways we find ourselves "stuck", psychotherapy can help disentangle these impasses, offering a freer way of being in the world.

We all have untapped resilience. Adversity can be a gift. As a therapist my goal is to help you live your life with better relationships, increased agency and more joy. Change is possible at any stage of life. We are all life-long learners, and we can begin to change when we feel understood. During the pandemic, I shifted my practice to a secure online platform. I was pleasantly surprised at the intimacy of that format. But nothing can replace meeting face-to-face, and so I work now both remote and in-person. Either way, three years after the initial crisis, still I wonder: Who doesn't feel the need for more human contact?

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?

By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?

Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?

It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
