Only offering virtual at this time! (email is the best way to get in touch) - Do you feel like you're doing "everything right" yet you still feel like something is "off"? Somehow you feel both anxious and depressed at the same time yet you can't pinpoint why? Or maybe you can pinpoint why - you just received an unwanted diagnosis, a loved one passed away, you're dealing with past trauma, going through a divorce, or trying to adjust from living at home to living in a dorm. Maybe in an effort to cope, you've turned to alcohol, food or some other escape. But you're tired of just surviving and you're ready to start thriving.

People have an unlimited capacity for growth and change. People come to therapy for a wide range of reasons. My role as a therapist is to assist you in working towards your goals by offering support, validation, as well as practical tools that will assist you in working towards achieving those goals. Most of my training and experience has been in working with individuals who have experienced trauma. What I have learned in each of the practice settings that I have worked in is that each person is unique and requires a slightly different approach. I will routinely check in with you and shift our focus if needed in therapy.

Hi! My name is Amber and I am an LCSW in Oregon and Washington. I have much experience working with teens, families, and adults particularly around trauma and more severe symptoms of anxiety and depression. My experience has also brought me to working with those with chronic pain, comorbid disorders, body image issues, gender questions, neurodivergence, and self-harm. I have a particular affinity for people who have endured trauma and who feel like they are outsiders. I pride myself in being culturally sensitive and welcoming to all, and someone who works as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

You’ve been hit hard by life. Your emotions are overwhelming at times. You’re frozen by indecision and self-doubt. You’re doing well in your career but you’re not being noticed or promoted because you can’t seem to make relationships work. You have trouble with trust and intimacy. You experience your world through the lens of negativity, hopelessness and pessimism. You know you’re childhood history of abuse, of being bullied or shamed has created the high degrees of anxiety you feel around people and fear of being judged. You know you need therapy though you know talking about your past has never helped, and yet you keep trying.

I have had the privilege of witnessing people undergo the slow, extremely subtle and remarkable journey of healing and self-transformation. This process of psychological growth is astoundingly complex, multilayered, circular and even mysteriously numinous in its unfolding. My philosophy as a therapist is primarily on core transformation rather than merely symptom management and needless to say, I strongly believe in the centrality of the therapeutic relationship as a significant healing agent. Moving towards our wholeness necessitates the courage to first move into the wounded parts that we all have as members of the human species.

I am a therapist with over thirty years clinical experience. Over the years I've worked with and helped hundreds of individuals and couples through a wide range of difficulties. My style is respectful, interactive and dynamic. I've learned that there are a lot ways to help, to heal and to promote personal growth, and that no particular approach fits every person or situation. Anxious? Depressed? Or individuals with problems arising from recent traumatic events or from childhood trauma or neglect, whose parents may have been inconsistent or worse, I often combine EMDR, IFS and other mindfulness strategies.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?

By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?

Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?

It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
