In my wholistic approach to helping folks heal from betrayal trauma and the residue of coercive control and narcissistic abuse, we will debrief your experience, gently make space for having all the hard feelings together and support you in learning how to be in and with your feelings in a supported, regulated manner to help you reestablish a sense of safety.
Perhaps you have come to realize you need support to cope with what some might term a high-conflict divorce or maybe you have come to feel that you are a shadow of your former self after a long-term painful relationship or maybe you are questioning whether or not you have been a victim of domestic abuse. These experiences could indicate that you have been a victim of coercive control, sometimes referred to as narcissistic abuse, a type of relational abuse that is increasingly common. If so, you are not alone. If so, you are likely in need of support, education and help in healing from betrayal trauma.

My final area of focus is psychological trauma and narcissistic abuse.
My practice consists of helping my clients become more effective actors in their lives. In the service of these goals, I teach them how to become better critical thinkers, (working together on creating healthy beliefs about themselves, others, and their environments), providing the mental tools required for emotional regulation and a fulfilling life. Additionally, we work together on understanding the past and present sources of troublesome behaviors and reducing them; this approach is called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. And, I specialize in a form of CBT called Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), used to treat OCD.

I also have over eight years of experience successfully working with clients who experience recurring and persistent depression issues as well as individuals who may be suffering from narcissistic parenting and/or intergenerational trauma.
Trying to pick the right therapist can be a challenge. You can think of our first meeting more like a conversation, where we will go over what you are experiencing and how I can help you materialize your goals, values, and priorities. I offer a safe, comfortable, and compassionate space where we can explore how to reduce your suffering and help you get to where you want to be. For years, I have made it my purpose to help others resolve their internal pain and heartache. Although I tailor my approach for each client, I tend to consistently utilize EMDR, psychodynamic, gestalt, DBT, and narrative theoretical orientations.

Change can be intimidating. We develop methods of coping that, at one time, perhaps helped to survive, but now prevent us from ultimately thriving. This can manifest in our relationship patterns and our mood, causing disruption in work, love, family, friendships and a healthy identity. My approach to therapy is rooted in helping clients develop a deeper understanding of these patterns and effecting change and empowerment through insight, support, and challenging maladaptive beliefs.

If you feel hopeless, I will hold hope for you. If you feel helpless, I will remind you of how strong you are even if you don't feel strong in the moment. We all struggle to let go of our past, maybe an imperfect childhood or a traumatic romantic relationship. We all want a second chance to create the life we were supposed to have. Change is painful. And you may have to walk away from something, or someone, who no longer serves you.

Joseph Campbell wrote that, "Opportunities to find deeper power within ourselves come when life seems most challenging." I applaud the courage it takes to reach out for help, knowing that our first reaction to debilitating fear, pain, and life challenges is often to try to ignore or avoid it. Therapy is an opportunity to suffer less and thrive more, and undergo transformation in the context of a safe and supportive environment.

Human behavior is influenced by individual experiences - whether they are powerful, traumatic, or seemingly insignificant, it is important to process how said experiences impact our daily lives. My personal mission statement is to both allow and encourage all people to see their self-worth and potential impact in the world. When both parties of the therapeutic experience are committed to reaching that potential, powerful change can be made.

Most people come to therapy with a specific symptom or problem, which they hope to change. It may be a particular fear such as a fear of flying or of speaking up in groups; it may be a more general, distressing, feeling of depression or loneliness, or it may be a pattern of behavior that is disruptive - a pattern such as a tendency to be hypercritical, a difficulty in taking initiative or an inability to keep one's own needs and wishes firmly in mind.

Life transitions - from getting married, a new job, having children, or retirement - present us with new and unique challenges that we have to navigate. Oftentimes the challenges presented by these life transitions are informed by our experiences in navigating previous major life transitions. My approach to psychotherapy is to examine not only the current challenges but also any previous obstacles that we have faced in order to determine what interpersonal, internal, and skills-based needs may be getting in the way of successfully navigating the current situation.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?

By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?

Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?

It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
