I believe that improving your relationship with yourself improves everything. Self-work can be some of the most difficult work to engage in, but together we can make it some of the most rewarding work that you’ve ever done. Interpersonal relationships, mental health concerns, work life, all of these and more can make us feel confused about who we are, where we fit in and how to move forward. My focus is in helping individuals and couples navigate difficult feelings, identify and change dysfunctional thoughts and patterns, and overcome challenging situations in order to enjoy a life that they deserve.

Therapists can't be good at everything. That's why I devote the vast majority of my practice to couples. Relationships are hard and we can find ourselves acting in ways that surprise even ourselves when things go wrong. So, you won't find me occupying the moral high ground, playing therapy tricks on you, or judging you. I'm marriage and relationship friendly, so I won't push you toward a crisis, a divorce or a break-up. As it is 50% of marriages end in divorce and upwards of 65% of second marriages end in a break-up, so if you have hopes and dreams for making things work, I'll be behind you 100%.

Finding a therapist with whom you feel safe and comfortable is essential for a successful outcome. Clients have told me that I am easy to connect with and tend to put people at ease quickly. Creating a warm, respectful and non-judgmental atmosphere is my first priority. I also feel that laughter/humor can be very therapeutic when appropriate!

Hi, I'm Adam. Therapist shopping can be difficult! Some general info about me: I have a psychodynamic orientation (which means I believe that the relationship between the therapist and you is an important part of the process). My work is informed by buddhist ideas (i.e., most suffering comes from attachment to something). I like to use humor and poetry in therapy. In the end, I believe we need to feel some sense of connection with the person we are working with, so I encourage you to "shop" until you find the person who feels right to you.

We often create a story about our lives that is untrue or unkind. We become bound by shame, guilt or negative self-perceptions. These views shape how we show up in the world and dictate what we feel we deserve and what we can achieve. Four principles of my therapeutic practice include: addressing shame, challenging negative core beliefs, building self-awareness and creating self-efficacy.

Many come to therapy knowing only that they are struggling to get things done, their relationships have become a source of stress rather than comfort, or they need help processing trauma, loss, or other painful experiences impacting their daily lives. Whatever your circumstances, I strive to help each person or family I work with achieve greater emotional, psychological, and social well-being, while also alleviating symptoms. I use the power of storytelling and understand that each person I work with has many, important stories to tell. I also value and work with each person's nervous system in the healing process.

I help people relieve anxiety and weather difficult transitions with grace. My clients are generally emotionally healthy but have gotten stuck. Whether you’re newly retired, newly parenting, newly married, newly returned to graduate school, or newly graduated from college, the common denominator holds true: transitions are hard. Transitions can leave everyone - even the strongest people - feeling a little lost. As a licensed psychologist with over 40 years experience providing therapy to clients as well as training to doctoral level psychologists, I feel confident that our work together will help you get your life back on track.

Hi, I'm a clinical psychologist and have spent the last 22 years providing DBT in the Twin Cities community; first during my doctoral internship, then for 15 years at the University of Minnesota Psychiatry Department, and now in my private practice. I have been trained in multiple variations of DBT by recognized experts in DBT. I specialize in working with individuals who have a history of trauma and offer prolonged exposure as a treatment for PTSD. My training and experience have prepared me for helping individuals with a history of or actively struggling with suicidal thoughts and ideation.

I offer my clients a compassionate, creative, and collaborative approach in their healing work. I use psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and integrative therapies encouraging my clients to find meaning in their life's journey and struggles as well as find new ways to care for the self. Although I am a generalist when it comes to working with a variety of diverse clients and issues, I also believe strongly in the mind/body connection and help my clients find ways to reconnect and find balance in their lives. This is especially helpful when dealing with grief, relationship issues, life transitions, or trauma.

I enjoy working with clients of all backgrounds and experiences. With that, I do not feel as if there is an ideal client, as everyone deserves a therapeutic, trusting relationship.

Melissa (she/they) I’m so glad that you are here. I recognize the vulnerability it takes to engage in therapy, and I feel that it is a privilege to be able to walk alongside someone and be a witness to their growth and discovery. First and foremost, I am a relational therapist. I strongly believe that we heal in safe and healthy relationships with others. Therefore, I work hard to build relationships with each of my clients. I am strengths-based, person-centered, and trauma and attachment-informed. It is also important to me that I work to create a space that is Fat positive, Queer and Trans affirming, and Culturally responsive.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Saint Paul?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
