Hypnosis is a way of more directly accessing the unconscious mind (which is responsible for much of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors) through trance. Hypnotherapy is the application of this technique for therapeutic benefits. It is an effective way to address root causes of problems rather than just treating symptoms.
Media representations of hypnosis often promote the myth that hypnosis is mind control. This is simply not the case. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Nothing can occur during hypnosis that the unconscious isn't in agreement with. Most often one is aware of what is happening and remembers the experience.
