I developed a 'whole brain' creative arts therapy to help clients find the words and images that can express their thoughts and emotions. This enables clients to 'see' how their negative behaviors originally developed as a way to cope with high levels of interpersonal stress. The BrainsmART process empowers clients with strategies that organize their emotions as they discharge past traumas from their body and mind. Once emotions are 'seen' and 'named', clients can re-'view' the memories and beliefs and re-route their self-destructive behaviors. I specialize in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder and the spectrum of self-harming behaviors that develop from abandonment and loss. Eating disorders, addictions, mood disorders, and self harming are understood as adaptive. The BrainsmART approach taps open the innate need to express ourselves through imagery and words.
I combine the principles of Gestalt, Interpersonal Neurobiology, and Attachment with a Trauma-informed Creative Arts approach to integrate body, mind, and emotions. My experience with the visual and musical arts and research in the psychobiology of trauma, combine to offer BRAINsmART strategies that reroute negative emotions, thoughts, and behavior into patterns of creative action.

Healing Trauma through Creativity
This is a group addressing how we hurt ourselves by displacing our emotional problems on our bodies. Participants must be ready to move beyond their self-harming behaviors. We discuss how self-harming behaviors are addictive because they were 'adapted' for dealing with adverse childhood events. We learn how to safely reveal and re-'view' the negative emotions and core beliefs. A music selection from one participant enables everyone to find their personal imagery and words to 'express the distress' of events that still hurt. This sharing empowers participants to choose creative action even under the stress of daily life.
