Especially for some of the most successful among us, we can hold ourselves to the highest standards of performance in all areas. Sometimes we may feel that we're supposed to have all the answers to the challenges life throws our way, even when that isn’t always possible. An achievement focus can come at the expense of other areas of our lives. I see therapy as a collaborative experience. I work with individuals and couples to help unlock what holds them back to gain an understanding of how our histories shape our present, while building a foundation of skills in the here-in-now to promote healing and a future that is self-defined.

Her training is grounded in the Multicultural Counseling & Therapy Model (MCT).
I believe that every individual has great potential and deserves to live a fulfilling life; I also recognize that difficulties and obstacles are inevitable. My goal for therapy is to create a safe space for my clients to explore how those difficulties and obstacles may affect them — physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually — and to use the therapeutic space to practice bringing forward their strengths so that they can see themselves beyond their problems. When you come to me, you’re not just my client. You’re a fellow human with hopes, dreams, vulnerabilities, strengths, weaknesses and ultimately potential.

Are you struggling with the painful remnants of a recent break up, seeking to put an end to unhealthy relationship patterns and/or facing difficult childhood experiences holding you back from moving forward? Perhaps you're worried about seeking therapy due to cultural stigma or finding yourself at odds with cultural expectations placed on you by society? Born in India, raised in New York, I recognize the unique pressures and conflicts faced by individuals caught between two seemingly opposing cultural identities. I utilize a multicultural lens that provides a safe space to explore these internal and external sources of tension.

I am a compassionate therapist who appreciates working side by side with my clients on their therapeutic journey. I utilize a multimodal approach to treatment as I recognize that there is no one approach that applies to all situations. My ideal client is trying to understand not only the root causes that created a less than optimal life functioning emotionally, socially, occupationally, academically, or intrafamilially, but the actual cognitive behavioral steps to remedy the problem. I believe most problems we encounter in our everyday lives can be improved upon and transformed into a life we have chosen.

I offer my clients the elements that I find most valuable in any therapeutic relationship; support, encouragement, empathic listening, non-judgement, interaction, collaboration, and trust. With a varied toolbox and skill set that we can draw upon, I enjoy blending evidence based practices with more creative approaches when called for. Some clients are open to including mind/ body based practices in their work with me while others may pursue a more traditional route. Ultimately, we will work collaboratively on the issues you are facing.

Multicultural Therapists

What type of therapy is multicultural therapy?

Multicultural therapy is not tied to any specific therapy; rather, it is an overarching approach to therapy that aims to acknowledge and address the influence that factors like race, gender identity, and cultural background can have on someone’s life. Multicultural approaches can be applied to CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and others, and can be practiced with individuals, couples, families, or groups.

What can I expect from multicultural therapy?

Multicultural counseling should be tailored to the client’s unique identity and cultural needs. Such approaches often prioritize the building of trust so that the client feels comfortable exploring various aspects of their identity and any challenges caused by mismatches between their identity and the dominant culture. Beyond that, the format and timeline of therapy will be heavily influenced by the therapist’s preferred therapy approach and the specific problems for which the client sought therapy.

Can multicultural therapy help treat trauma?

Yes. Cultural factors such as racial background, gender identity and or sexuality, and immigration or refugee status can influence both whether someone experiences trauma and how they cope afterward. Multicultural approaches to trauma-informed care will be aware of these influences, helping the client recognize how their response to trauma may be shaped by their cultural background and identify coping mechanisms that take their identity into account.

What are the benefits of seeing a multicultural therapist?

Members of minority groups who seek therapy are sometimes frustrated by providers who don’t understand their cultural background or dismiss the ways in which race, gender, or other facets of their identity influence their lived experience. Seeing a multicultural therapist can help these clients feel seen, understood, and able to develop solutions to life challenges that take their upbringing, beliefs, and past experiences into account.
