Professionally and personally, I have a passion for social justice work and am driven to help all people successfully navigate an increasingly complex multicultural society. As technology shrinks the world, we are exposed to an ever more diverse set of people, communities, ideas, and perspectives. Whether we are a part of historically privileged or oppressed communities, all of us are working to find our place in this neo-diverse society. More and more, I see this challenge represented in my clients as they seek understanding of their issues, strengths, and identities.

I have worked as a clinical faculty in several universities for over ten years and have taught multicultural counseling, psychopathology, and psychological theories/practicum.
I moved to North Carolina from the Northwest in 2018 and am considered a true generalist. This means I have over 10,000 hours of experience helping children, adolescents, and adults with the myriad concerns that bring them to therapy (see the specialty list below): however, my areas of expertise are in trauma, anxiety, improving interpersonal relationship dynamics, and performance improvement. I enjoy working with health care professionals, athletes, and professors/teachers working toward tenure. I have a certain number of spots in my schedule reserved for NC State Health Plan insured folks and currently have two open spots.

Not Accepting New Clients. Why cancer now? Hearing the diagnosis of cancer can be overwhelmingly devastating, emotionally and physically. Treatment and tests can trigger anxiety, depression, existential crisis, or the exacerbation of traumas and conflicts. It feels like your life has an expiration date and with each ache, sleeplessness, fear, and sadness they become a reminder of that “c” word taking control of your life as well as your loved ones. Are you struggling to find some sense of it all? Are you on a quest for some semblance of normalcy? Are you questioning how can you continue to create the life you want to live?

Hello there! If you are reading this, perhaps we will get to know one another. I have been a therapist for over 10 years, but been helping people longer than that. After working in foster care, I completed my studies in college focusing on mental health to best help others. It is a privilege to help in someone's healing journey. Life can really be tough. Sometimes we have loads that we carry, beliefs and lessons we have learned along the way, some good, and some not so good. I hope to help people of many multi-ethnic backgrounds, those who are open to healing. It is worth it.

Are you stuck and needing to process childhood trauma? Is your child sad, anxious or angry, and you know they need help? Do you feel like no one understands the challenges of creating a family (infertility, perinatal loss, miscarriage, IVF, adoption)? I shifted careers into mental health counseling in 2016 after 20 years of community advocacy to address injustice and empower women, children, and communities. I am a healing-centered, trauma-focused therapist now because I believe you - and your family - deserve guidance and support to reimagine and re-author your life narrative.

Do you feel safe being who you really are? It's our birthright to be seen, be loved and belong. But if you have a marginalized identity or belong to more than one culture, it can be challenging to reconcile who you are with others' expectations of who you should be. You might be a helping professional who gives so much it feels like there’s nothing left for you. Perhaps you grew up in a religious tradition that no longer fits you, or no tradition at all, and you're seeking a connection with something greater than yourself. Maybe you've tried talk therapy and it wasn't enough. Maybe you've thought, There's gotta be another way.

Multicultural Therapists

What type of therapy is multicultural therapy?

Multicultural therapy is not tied to any specific therapy; rather, it is an overarching approach to therapy that aims to acknowledge and address the influence that factors like race, gender identity, and cultural background can have on someone’s life. Multicultural approaches can be applied to CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and others, and can be practiced with individuals, couples, families, or groups.

What can I expect from multicultural therapy?

Multicultural counseling should be tailored to the client’s unique identity and cultural needs. Such approaches often prioritize the building of trust so that the client feels comfortable exploring various aspects of their identity and any challenges caused by mismatches between their identity and the dominant culture. Beyond that, the format and timeline of therapy will be heavily influenced by the therapist’s preferred therapy approach and the specific problems for which the client sought therapy.

Can multicultural therapy help treat trauma?

Yes. Cultural factors such as racial background, gender identity and or sexuality, and immigration or refugee status can influence both whether someone experiences trauma and how they cope afterward. Multicultural approaches to trauma-informed care will be aware of these influences, helping the client recognize how their response to trauma may be shaped by their cultural background and identify coping mechanisms that take their identity into account.

What are the benefits of seeing a multicultural therapist?

Members of minority groups who seek therapy are sometimes frustrated by providers who don’t understand their cultural background or dismiss the ways in which race, gender, or other facets of their identity influence their lived experience. Seeing a multicultural therapist can help these clients feel seen, understood, and able to develop solutions to life challenges that take their upbringing, beliefs, and past experiences into account.
