I'm an autistic therapist looking to help others see the beauty in themselves. I love working with neurodivergent adults to help them reframe the way they look at their different abilities. I think my background in rhetoric adds a unique dimension to my approach with clients as we collaborate. I enjoy helping clients navigate identity struggles, desire to find belonging, modify behavior, and create the change they want to see on their lives. Let's get to know each other. Tell me about your strengths and special interests. I think building a curious, non-judgmental, and supportive relationship is a great way to get started.

I believe that psychotherapy is an active process resulting in clarity and change. It can help identify ineffective patterns of thinking and behavior, which may create stress, emotional problems, stress related medical problems, addiction problems, and/or relationship problems. Sometimes the work can be difficult but can also be profoundly rewarding and life changing. I believe in the power of positive change and would love to help you turn your stress into a life balance.

I believe that growth and change is a necessary process for individuals, relationships and family systems. My role as a therapist for the past 22 years has been to provide a catalyst for this change process. I use techniques that are evidence based, current and provide consistent results.

I find that my skill and experience are very helpful to people who have survived trauma. I work often with folks who are burdened with emotional, physical, and sexually traumatic histories. I also welcome you to contact me if you are questioning your gender identity. I have assisted many people move through the difficult process of confirming their internal gender identity with the labels attached at birth. I also welcome you to come and chat if you are exploring an alternative family structure such as polyamory.

I believe we all have the ability to live meaningful lives. And that we all have the potential to heal past traumas, develop new strategies for coping, and grow into the people we want to be. As a therapist, I meet you where you are and, without judgment, maintain a deep sense of curiosity about you and where you want to go. Therapy can play a critical role in unearthing patterns and fully exploring the path that led you to this moment. It can also help you map the way forward through understanding, discovery and clarity. I consider it a privilege to help you along this journey.

Life is difficult to navigate in the best of circumstances. We often carry with us a past that influences how we interact with others, our perception of the way others interact with us, and the patterns we form in our relationships. You do not have to navigate these waters alone. Therapy can help support your individual, family and relationship goals. I understand it takes courage to ask for help and I want to make the process easy for you.

Psychotherapy is the process of deepening awareness. This means knowing and facing our emotions. Anxiety is an emotion that makes everything harder. We can learn methods of dealing with it so it doesn't cripple us. Anger is an emotion that makes us and others miserable.Once we learn its triggers, we can tame it. Depression can be treated by leaning new ways of seeing things. Learning how to connect with people in healthy ways is vital to our happiness. Many of our relationships are painful. Since psychotherapy is a relationship with another, it is an excellent way to learn how to connect with someone without fear of being judged.

Everyone deserves a life of wholeness and belonging. I aim to help you strengthen your connection with yourself, those close to you, and the larger world around you. I specialize in working with trauma, grief, self-worth, and communication. My therapeutic style is warm and accepting. Trying to navigate life today is challenging. Having someone to talk to may be the first step. Thank you for taking time to read this. My name is Vasa Parsons-Mecham, and I am part of the Missoula community. Wearing a variety of hats, I have worked with individuals and families for the past 30+ years. I draw on a variety of methods that include sensorimotor psychotherapy (somatic work), collaboration, cognitive behavior therapy, and strengths based. Therapy, like life, is not a one size fits all. By taking the time to listen to you, I can better hear and assess.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
