My experience is in sexual assault and domestic violence, spiritual and religious trauma, LGBTQIA+ issues, grief work, chronic illness, death/dying and more.
I believe that each of us is a complete person with unique experiences, strengths, characteristics, and opportunities for growth. A life that includes pain, mistakes, betrayal or trauma is not a broken life or one less worthy of love. Everyone goes through times when we can benefit from an ally to walk alongside us, assist us in reaching our goals, or empower us to find our magic. I am honored to have the privilege of my profession and I look forward to the journey with each of my clients.

I have extensive training and experience helping children, adults, couples, and families affected by various traumas (particularly physical or sexual abuse ) explore and understand how their past affects their current relationships, and how to use this understanding to achieve desired personal and relational goals.
I focus on meeting people where they are in their work, providing a safe space free of judgment, and helping people discover and implement solutions that are meaningful to them personally. I help individuals, couples, and families discover and celebrate their strengths, and build on those strengths. I believe in the power of words, relationships, play, humor, mindfulness, and experience in finding happiness and reaching goals.

I understand that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work in therapy and tailor my counseling techniques to match the needs and comfort level of each individual who walks through my door. You can expect a warm, accepting presence from me, as I always work to build a therapeutic relationship that fosters healing. I trust that every individual has the capacity to create change, to heal, and to overcome barriers in their lives with adequate support and resources. At the end of the day, I desire to offer hope. Weather changes. Clouds shift. The sun will rise.

It is the call of my soul to help individuals remember their value and learn to navigate life as the empowered people they were meant to be. Our sense of self is shaped by our experience and when we lack support or encounter traumatic situations, our self-concept may distort. I will be your greatest champion as we work together to reframe such distortions, enabling you to embody your authentic self. The truth is that within each of us lies a power beyond measure. I want to walk beside you as that power blossoms. Together, we will call forth the strength within you.

In art therapy, we make things together to create a bridge to communication, sometimes staying in the metaphor, and other times using the art product as a jumping off point for verbal discussion. When using narrative therapy, we find new and creative ways to look at old, unproductive stories. We create goals together. I provide the solid, predictable framework and ongoing support, as well as parent coaching. We create opportunities for deep insight, meaningful growth and healthy risk-taking.

Often times in life we are faced with difficulties, trauma, and life transitions that can be painful, overwhelming, confusing, and frightening. During these times, we can also feel depressed, angry, anxious, and struggle with day to day life. We may find that we are triggered by stress, conflict, and old wounds may reopen and even deepen. Reliving intrusive and painful memories may cause us to distance ourselves from others. Further, it can be agonizing trying to navigate through these difficulties and times. We may feel alone or that we have no one to talk to that we can trust. We may find that our normal supports are not enough.

Are you waking up at night worrying about problems in your life or what is going on in the world? Do you feel that you "are not good enough" or "lovable enough"? Everyone has concerns in their life and learning to deal with them in a healthy way eliminates a need to turn to behaviors that cause more problems. Working with an empathetic and compassionate person helps you take down the barriers and look at the possibilities in life. I have learned, on a personal level, that I can change old unhealthy behaviors for new healthy ones.

Childhood trauma often times comes with a feeling of deep shame, which turns into a core belief that you are bad, undeserving and unworthy of anything good. Shame comes from an old German word meaning “to cover.” You hide your feelings, keeping them secret. Because—if they really knew who you were, they couldn’t love you. You spend your life trying so hard to cover up the bad so no one will see. In doing this you lose your authenticity, your truth, your dreams. You become someone you are not. You lose your light. Working through trauma is hard, it takes courage, dedication and patience, but it is worth it. You are worth it.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
