I have experience in working with older kids (8+), teens, young adults and parents who are stuck in a cycle where they feel unable to change. Many of my clients are dealing with anxiety and depression, and many are questioning whether there is more underneath. I have helped many families navigate the life-changing process of discovering and dealing with new diagnoses of ADHD (in particular girls and women), high functioning autism spectrum, learning disabilities, gifted issues and self-harm. I also work with kids struggling with behavioral issues and provide parent classes titled "When Everything's a Battle" and other topics.

My journey into becoming a therapist began well before I was born with the inheritance of generational family mental health issues. As a teenager, I was drawn to art making as a means of processing difficulties I was experiencing and did not have the verbal understanding nor support system to address. I pursued a career in the arts through university and apprenticeships but was not fully satisfied and needed more internal investigation for what connection I was having with art and my psyche. I studied anthropology, took classes in psychology, and was exposed to indigenous healing methods. Eventually, I discovered art therapy.

At this time, I am exclusively a Telehealth provider for Montana clients. It is one of the most profound honors of my life the last 18 years to have people trust me with their deepest wounds and to share their journeys of courage. I have learned the importance of being lost, the language of rain and storms, and the deep echoing of the mourning howl. I believe that by allowing and accepting the mystery of loss with it's own timing, we have a chance to claim our path, our symbols. In order to become whole, the shadow and the light must be recognized, all must be explored.

I sincerely enjoy working with people and have experience with all diagnoses. I have had trainings in anxiety, depression and bipolar issues. I am watchful of breathing habits and body language during sessions so am able to coach clients on their own patterns. I have been doing this for many years and feel like I have learned so much. I believe there is a definite connection between our thoughts and our emotions so will often ask if that person is aware of their body responses and sensations to their thoughts.

So here you are...looking for a counselor. You've been considering it, you've got some things you want to work through, but-you're just not sure. Hey...I can't blame you! The idea of counseling, either going for the first time or trying again after a terrible experience can be SCARY! Well, that's not how it's supposed to be-when you meet with me, my one and only goal is to help you feel accepted just how you are, no matter what you're bringing through my door. Are your kids driving you crazy? Is your husband on your last nerve? Memories or old trauma preventing you from moving forward? I can help!

We all experience times in our lives where we need a little extra support, empathy, compassion, and understanding. Navigating the ebb and flows of life can be tedious and can take a toll on your mind, body, and spirit. Working through the barriers that our work life and family life can present can be difficult.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
