Anxiety, depression, men's issues, college counseling, trauma, and relationships are just a few of the areas in which I have practiced with clients.
I approach counseling from a person-centered and cognitive behavioral perspective. There are times in life when everything seems to be going well and there are times when we may face challenges or encounter adversity. As a counselor, I believe in supporting the whole person in a safe and judgment free environment as we examine not only the challenges, but the beliefs and cognitions surrounding those challenges. I believe in getting to know you in order to understand your perceptions and the expertise you have within you regarding your own life and experiences.

In an increasingly digitalized, isolated, and seemingly meaningless world, it can be so difficult to find connection, purpose, and identity. In addition to treating specific mental health issues, therapy is also a space to wrestle with the big (and small!) questions in life. Let me be your mental sparring partner as we figure out possible answers to life's challenges.

Psychotherapy requires an experienced and mature therapist. My way of being with someone is interpersonal. It is founded on establishing an emotional connection with the person that comes to me and to help them understand and hopefully resolve their emotional struggles. The importance of healthy exploration of who one is, is essential to being able to have healthy and growth producing relationships. Resolution to problems and change is not found in simple cookie cutter or templated solutions. For me personally psychotherapy is the way that I live my life. It is not a collection of techniques but a significant part of who I am.

Starting therapy can be a difficult process. Finding a therapist who is a “good fit” for you can be tricky. Meta-analytic research on the therapeutic relationship, or therapeutic alliance, indicates that “the quality of the alliance was more predictive of positive outcome than the type of intervention" (Ardito & Rabellino, 2011).
Connor McSweeney here, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Helena born, 5th-gen Montanan. Growing up in Helena, with much of my family on the highline (in the Fort Benton and Malta area), I have deep values that I find embodied by many Montanans: kindness, community, stewardship, and humor.

If you are struggling to control your unwanted sexual behaviors, despite your best efforts, and it has put significant strain on relationships, family, job, or other areas of your life, I see you. I have walked the road you are on - successfully - and look forward sharing the way through with you. Sexuality is a normal, healthy part of adult life that can increase your emotional intimacy, strengthen your sense of self-image, and act as a buffer to outside stressors. In short, sex matters. But when sexual behaviors become compulsive, destructive, or illegal, it's time to get help.

Sometimes we get stuck in patterns that don't reflect who we truly are. In therapy, I help individuals make sense of what's happening beneath the surface—how past experiences, unmet needs, or early relationships may still shape how you feel, act, and connect today. I have a special interest in helping men and young adults, neurodivergent clients, and people navigating intimacy, self-esteem, anger, or relational conflict. Our work will be collaborative and curious, helping you move toward greater self-understanding and emotional freedom.

Psychotherapy is not about a healer and a patient. Therapy is a human-to-human encounter where we build safety, radical acceptance, courageous self-assessment, and mutual humility. Together we build the strength, skills, courage and insight needed to reckon with all the turbulence that brought you to this moment, this meeting. I have certain skills, tools-for-exploration-and-healing, and ongoing specialized training. We hold space together to re-experience/speak/honor our suffering, and then use what we discover to grow your capacity for compassion, release, equanimity and joyful living.

I provide client-centered and humanistic counseling and therapy services for individuals. I follow the philosophy that we are all human beings, facing human problems. The aim of treatment is to reach stability, happiness in everyday life, and move closer toward the clients goals. This happens through making change, and changing the way we view our lives.

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
