I am most experienced working with people experiencing anxiety, stress, grief, and existential concerns like death, meaning, or spirituality, as well as couples and any related concerns.
We're all seeking a sense of fulfillment with our lives, and I am honored to work with you and help reveal what that means for you. Together, we can reveal what seems to stand in the way of that goal, and find hope in the face those challenges. You are part of my community, and supporting you also supports me.

These people can be partners, friends, children, ect.
Connection is foundational to the human experience. How we connect with ourselves and with those around us directly impacts how we walk through the world. I want to walk alongside you in a way that holds space to be curious about what may be getting in the way of connection. Possibly shame, trauma, depression, anxiety, perfectionism, poor communication ect. Furthermore, I want to help facilitate a move toward healing and restoration within ourselves and within our communities.

I spend much of my day helping people control or get rid of their panic, depression, trauma, anxiety, grief, OCD symptoms, loneliness, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or relationship/marriage issues.
Odds are that you are reading this because you are frustrated with at least one aspect of your life. And…you are sick of feeling helpless, hopeless, and stuck. Perhaps your stress has gotten so severe that you have begun experiencing actual medical symptoms, panic, depression, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or a grief reaction. Finally, you are now ready to roll up your sleeves and make some changes. Of course, change isn’t easy. But, inherently, we all know that if we don’t change we…calcify. Are you ready for positive change now?

I have 4 specialty areas, (1) trauma recovery, including PTSD and loss, (2) couples, (3) emotions like anxiety, anger, depression, and (4) children and teens
Family and our love life can be a big psychodynamic force for better or worse. A functional family is the first place to turn for healing. With children and teens I rely more on music, art, family and play therapy to address AdHD, defiance, parenting, grief, divorce, rage or meanness.

Is your relationship struggling with communication, intimacy or emotional connection?
As a Montana native, I previously worked as a medical doctor for over 10 years with a focus on helping patients through trauma, pain, and cancer.  As I worked toward my own recovery from surgical knee complications, I learned how to apply Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to my own well-being and was inspired to help others in a different capacity.

People heal in relationship — with themselves, with others, and within the quiet, trusted space of good counseling.
I specialize in complex trauma and grief; pain that doesn't move on a tidy timeline. Complex trauma can come from childhood adversity, relational harm, work-related exposure, or a long accumulation of hard things that were never yours to carry. Grief takes many forms: the loss of someone, a relationship, a role, a the life you thought you were going to have.

The importance of healthy exploration of who one is, is essential to being able to have healthy and growth producing relationships.
My practice primarily focuses on psychodynamic psychotherapy, and case consultation. Should this be a legal case I only work in strategic consultation with your attorney. I have been conducting an ongoing psychodiagnostic group and general case consultation for other clinicians for 45 years.

I believe that we're all works in progress, having found this to be true of clients struggling with life changes to clients with the most complicated of problems--even young gang members, in whom I've had the privilege of seeing humanity and goodness. The role of therapist, for me, is one of empowering, bearing witness to life's bewilderment and suffering, and jointly creating a peace of mind and resilience, sometimes in the face of unresolved problems, while honoring one's own truth and rewriting our narratives in a way that makes sense to us as we make meaning to our lives.

FAQ - About Couples Therapy
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
